Beats SLR Zoom Hands Down
I was given the SLR zoom as a gift, and it did not work with my camera lens combos. I have a Canon EOS 50D 15.1 MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) and several lenses with the heaviest being my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras . The SLR zoom just could not hold it well. This pod resolves that problem. The ballhead is sturdy and locks positively. This is not a small Gorillapod, this is relatively heavy but I believe the offset in it's holding strength makes the weight worthwhile. Many times you can substitute weight for strength, but that comes at a price. There is a significant difference in cost from the SLR Zoom to this model but it is well worth it, the SLR is largely plastic, this one is mostly metal. For those who are looking for a first tripod, DO NOT buy this tripod thinking it will replace a full-size model. This is one I bought to keep in my bag for those times I do not want to lug around the weight and size of a full sized model. This one will be with me at all times and will help me for those shots I was not planning. When I go out to get a shot on purpose, or when I can justify the extra hassle associated with a full sized, I will have my Manfrotto full sized rig. Overall, as a second, or even third, tripod, I would highly recommend. Very well built, very sturdy, looks nice, and packs easily.

I love it because it can go places normal tripods have ...
I'm loving this tripod, its strong enough to hold my Nikon D800 or my Sony A7R with 70-200G. Tripod is small and lighter than other tripods. I love it because it can go places normal tripods have a hard time, like I can wrap onto my bikes handle bars, onto a fence, tree limbs, the rails on stairs. packs easy onto my camera bag. IMO this is a must have. if you use a tripod and want a second as backup or shoot with two cameras this makes an ideal second tripod as it adds only 1.63lbs and best part uses arca swiss mount which works with my L Brackets. I tend to do shots of the milkyway, so i leave one camera on a sturdy tripod doing timelapse than use the gorillapod on my second camera, thus i can keep taking pictures while the other does its thing. The ballhead is high quality. Works great for mirrorless cameras too, I recommend this model for anything over 2lbs.

Finally a well made Joby product... that works
1. I use the tripod, probably more than the typical photographer due to my interest in panoramic photography. Thus, I've had occasion to use many types of tripods over the years (Bogen, Manfrotto, Gitzo... the traditional aluminum vs carbon fiber etc... etc...). Furthermore, one must understand and accept the premise that no one tripod is going to be appropriate for all situations. 2. With that being said, if you need a table top type tripod or a flexible tripod, then this is a no brainer purchase. Unlike the cheaper / smaller Joby tripods (which I have purchased in the past-> bad choice), this unit was well made, sturdy / solid, and most importantly is set up to utilize a ball head. The ball head issue is critical in my opinion because this will allow one to more securely hold their camera in place as well as more easily set up the camera for a shot. If you buy the cheaper Joby products that don't allow one to utilize an independent ball head, you're camera may sag at that junction point (it's somewhat difficult to explain but trust me on this one). 3. Now there may be folks wondering if they do need this bigger unit; it is definitely bigger than the lower end models (but definitely still compact compared to a regular tripod)--> I would advise that IF you shoot with any camera (s) other than a true small point / shoot, then just get this unit. As many have noted in their reviews, Joby overestimates the weight capacity of their units and thus don't waste your money on the cheaper models. Just get this one unit, which then should last for hopefully a long time and you'll experience a solid little tripod that actually works. In terms of the extra costs of buying a little ball head--> just get one, because you'll always be able to use that ball head with other tripods down the road. Various companies make nice little ballheads (velbon, really right stuff, the joby one looks fairly decent etc...)

will never pack a camera without.
the ultimate run and gun device for the remote/active shooter. This thing handles a mirrorless camera with ease and is rock solid with action cams. fold out the legs for an over the shoulder recording format and it is rock steady for interviews and pans. in tripod mode, it will conform to any style of surface and has just enough weight not to be hampered by wind. it will wrap around an object and even span weird gaps and hang from just about anything. If you are shooting a long telephoto just simply span out the legs further for a more steady base. If the legs cant accommodate your needs the ball head with cover the rest, the pan is a little sticky out of the box but smoothes up over time. The quick release plate is easy to use and the head locks up very solid. We no longer carry a full size or travel tripod anymore because these will do it all. Honestly, if there is a situation that this cant work for you well, your not using your imagination enough.

Nice, but somewhat large, stiff and heavy
I got this 3 weeks ago and the price was a hundred and change, so as I write this review I'm shocked that the price has bumped up over twenty-nine bucks in such a short time. In any case, this is a very different animal from my original tiny little Gorilla Pod, which can only support my 195g Canon S95, but not my 440g Fujifilm X30, and certainly nothing heavier than that. THIS GorillaPod is strong, however. The legs are strong and too stiff, and I can see it being somewhat difficult to wrap it around things as advertised (the legs feel like they might snap if you did that). The ball head very nice, good quality. I'm sending this particular tripod back because after looking at it, I've redefined what I need a small tripod for...not for wrapping around posts and such, which might be moderately useful occasionally, but rather, I want more of a lower tabletop tripod for shooting macro and closeups of things. I also tried my heavy Nikon D70S with its large, heavy zoom lens (I think it weighs 1.7 lbs total) and this GP supported it just fine no matter what position I put it in. However, since I want one of these that it more suitable for travel (shorter, lighter) and I don't travel with my Nikon, I'm returning this one (too large, high and heavy for my needs) and I think I'll get the newer, smaller 1K GorillaPod because it suits my intended use AND it is still small/light enough to take on trips...plus I think the legs might be easier to wrap around the occasional chair or pole. The weight capacity of the 1K version covers my two main cameras and is still compact and light enough to have more uses than this one. The legs on this large GP don't seem to be all the maneuverable, and I can definitely believe an earlier review in which the legs broke. I'd be afraid of that with this one...I think the metal in it affects things and I'd worry about the longevity of this GP. There is a newer (better?) version of this model (5K) out now, but the price is crazy high. I gave this tripod 4 stars because it really does seem strong and nicely made if it fits your particular needs. I obviously can't commend on how long it lasts without breaking.

I should have bought this earlier
An overseas trip recently reminded me that I am no longer a young 20 something who can lug a heavy tripod with me on long holiday - especially for trips that go from crowded cities to tracking along a mountain path. Honestly, I found myself getting aggitated by the weight of the tripod and DSLR camera - it felt like they weigh a tonne - not the best feeling on a holiday trip. I found this product in a shop and noticed that while it does not look as sturdy as a tripod... it is light and very compact. One of those things that can be easily thrown into a backpack and pull out when you need it. What surprises me is how capable it is in handling a DSLR - I have a Canon 5D MKII and a 70-200mm lens, and the flexible legs held firm... very impressive. Pros: 1. Light 2. Small 3. Flexible 4. Easy to handle 5. Strong enough to handle most DSLR weight you can throw at it 6. Great for travel... especially for older folks like myself (save yourself a backache) 7. Some museum do not consider this to be a "tripod" and so no one will stop you from using it!!!! *Big Plus* Cons: 1. Non-adjustable height 2. Not as sturdy as a 2.5kg tripod

Tripod splayed with longer lens attached.
I bought this for my son. He was looking for a light weight, portable tripod for his photography. He loved the thought of it & it was good for a regular camera. But, for a camera with a decent size lens, it didn't work. The lens happens to be his everyday lens. When set on a table with the larger lens attached, the tripod splayed. We did weight the camera & lens and it was under the weight limit, so we were a little disappointed. My son did think it was pretty cool & hopefully he will put it to good use.

Well Worth the Price
I never thought it would seem necessary to take the time to write a review of a tripod; obviously, the Gorillapod has proven me wrong. The strength combined with versatility makes this product essential to any serious photographer/cinematographer. For the past six months, I've been editor/producer of an extremely low-budget college film. Since my purchase of the Gorillapod, I've seen it's ability to quickly solve issues and reduce the price of catching difficult shots. My friend (writer and director), likes to shoot each scene at every angle possible (which is great for an editor). The other day we were shooting one of the major confrontations in the film, and thought we shoot get a high-angle shot. Filming this angle seemed impossible until I ended up climbing a tree and wrapping the arms around one of the branches. I'd had the Gorillapod long enough to not feel the terror of relying on one item to hold the weight of expensive equipment. However, I knew as I wrapped the arms around the branch that it's apparence is misleading. The director has a Focus himself now, and uses it in ways I've never thought of (such as clinging two arms over each side of the shoulder and using the fourth arm as a grip eliminates the need for a steady-cam). I also am taking a photography course, and my interest in night photography has made this product vital to getting shots requiring long exposures. Overall, the Gorillapod Focus has endless possibilities, and is an essential addition to anyones photographic arsenal. I highly recommend purchasing one, even if it cuts into a tight budget; it's advantages make the price more than fair.
