Great for removing pith from orange slices
At certain times of the year, there is a glut of mandarin oranges in our grocery store that they sell at cut rates or donate to the local food pantry (where I get them). I’ll come home with four or more bags of mandarins just past their sell-by date, only to discover there is not enough room in my freezer for the extras we can’t eat before they go bad. I’ve discovered that mandarin oranges can really well, but you have to soak them in water and pectin enzyme first to loosen and begin to the dissolve the bitter pith. That’s what I’m using this for. This method works really well to allow me to preserve a nutritious fruit that would otherwise wind up in the landfill.
