I have had to use a wide variety of them as the years have gone on. Getting the best thermal transfer has been a constant pursuit for me for the last 15 years. We would start off with the greats like IC Diamond and Arctic Silver. Then we would see heavier contenders like Master gel maker and PTM7950. It's very safe to say that thermal compounds are evolving all the time. As time has gone on most of these compounds have been retired. The current kings have been liquid metal, PTM7950, and Kingpin KPX. I don't recommend liquid metal as most computers are not built for it and it can short various components when not handled correctly. PTM7950 is best used for bare die head applications. Where does Kingpin KPX fit in? In all honesty, everywhere. It's not too thick or too thin. It's a standard paste so it can go on anything with an IHS but it's thick enough that you can use is on a bare die head on a GPU or a laptop or even a steamdeck. So which is the best? Well they both do things good and bad. KPX is great if you're overclocking. If you need extreme heat management KPX is what you want. It has a tendency to run 2 degrees cooler than PTM 7950. However that heat management only lasts 6 months as the more heat you apply to it the faster it degrades. Then it fully bakes in and degrades a bit more. When it degrades it's about 2 degrees hotter than PTM7950. It's down to personal choice. Do you want to have excellent thermal performance in the short term but need to replace it 6-8 months down the road? If so, KPX if for you. Do you have a laptop or other bare die head that you don't want to service for years on end and don't mind a 2 degree difference? If so PTM7950 is for you. Both are excellent. I use PTM7950 for GPUs as well as laptops and handheld pcs and I use KPX for anything with an IHS on it.
