If I had a heart
The Vikings remains one of my favourite TV series, even though the most recent seasons (of half-seasons) are getting a bit tedious and the storyline more fanciful, less historically-accurate. I would rank the series high up there along with GoT, Breaking Bad, Narco’s, Rome and The Handmaid. Why? well first of all I’m a history, early-medieval fanatic and I like good story telling. Secondly, because it is phenomenally well made; the atmosphere and setting feels genuine and the cinematography is quite good, though perhaps not as large-scale epic as GOT (yet Vikings gets away with it as the battles and certainly the raids were probably of modest size). Thirdly, and not least important, the story line makes sense, the events are not too repetitive, (at least not in the first 3 seasons). Also there is character development. And everything is progressing towards a sensible end of the narrative, rather than endless meandering until the series is abruptly cancelled, as is the case with some streaming series. So at least in the first 3 /4 seasons there is a brilliant portrayal of Ragnar, we progresses from a nice Scandi neighbourhood bloke to a warrior of visibly mythical proportions. We see how he and his band develop long distance sea voyages. Then there is the friendship with Floki the shipbuilder and the tension between his Ragnar and his brother. But frankly the series is filled with interesting, attractive characters like Torvi, Largertha, King Ecbert, Bjorn ect. What I really liked is how they all speak not only with Scandinavian accents but also with the typical intonation - I have many Scandinavian friends and it is mostly well done. Although I would have preferred the dialogue to be in old-norse and Anglo Saxon dialect just to add to the authenticity,. The fact fact that it was made along side History chancel more ore less ensures a proper historical background, although in the later series this is abandoned to some extend.I bought this DVD set for family members who refuse to get a streaming service. And to be able to own it and watch it again at a later stage. For DVD on a high end led screen the quality is not too bad though my 4k player upscales it.

A true modern epic...
Rooted strongly in historical fact, this fictional epic follows the first forays of the Norsemen out into the wider world. With excellent, suspenseful storytelling and a strong cast of characters that includes the brilliantly insane Floki, played by Gustav Skarsgård, Vikings rivals Game Of Thrones in both scope and brutality. What makes the series truly compelling is the performance of the lead actor, Travis Fimmel, as the legendary and charismatic Ragnar Lothbrok. Fimmel steals every scene he has with his stunning portrayal of a complicated man driven by ambition, love, lust, pride and duty, and touched by the gods with madness and wisdom in equal measure.Still going strong in its fifth season, and even thriving without Fimmel in the lead, this series is well worth investing in. Dare I say it’s better than Game Of Thrones...?

interesting but bloody & brutal
Very interesting between the battle scenes. The battle scenes are bloody and become a little boring. Also the sacrifices and cruelty of putting people to death are not for the fainthearted. Would not watch this twice as too brutal.

Nice crinkly coastlines, axes and shield maidens
Viking fantasy but has sufficient hardship, brutality, sex and hunger for knowledge and discovery to suspend disbelief and enthrall. Season 4 part 1 pre-ordered immediately.See also Daniel McCoy - The Viking Spirit for reasonable intro to Vikings.
