Very simple to learn, very subtle and intricate to play!
It takes two minutes to read and understand the rules, but no two games seem to be the same, and practising playing both sides really brings out the subltety and intricacy of the game. Brilliant!

Not best quality
A Fun and brilliantly challenging game.I have no issues save that the pieces aren't made of brilliant quality. One even came with a chip, not too happy about that.

Put down your battle axe and letβs play!
The game is well-presented in a nice box and the pieces are attractive and well-cast, based on an original Hebridean design. The rules are brief but clear. Books are available on the subject if you want more historical background or alternate rules. It feels incredible when you realise you are following the same thought processes that men and women were thinking in the Dark Ages, more than a millennium ago; like reaching back through time. The game itself is fun, strategic and involving. In fact itβs quite addictive.

Love all things Viking then this might be for you.
Hnefatafl the Viking game it said on the store description and I have to say I'm blown away, not only with the set itself. Which even if you never get round to playing, once set up looks very estetically pleasing. One thing I will mention here is, that I was quite worriedby the rattling inside my parcel on delivery. But on unpacking everything was fine and I'm sure in time I'll use the instructions of how they assume this game was played ,I say assume because nobody really knows but the "rules" supplied seem pretty easy to follow, I just have to find a willing opponent.

Disappointing Quality
My view differs from that of the reviews that I read prior to purchase. I was disappointed in the quality of the product considering the asking price. I felt the playing pieces were light weight and "plasticky" and the linen "board" was only just adequate with each square being less than an inch wide. I decided to return the set and was able to purchase a very nicely carved wooden board and pieces from a craft shop on ETSY for less cost. The box is just a blue cardboard box - nothing exceptional. I am surprised at some of the glowing reviews though I did find a few on Amazon.com more in keeping with my own perceptions.

Very good quality game
This is a well presented package with very nice historically accurate pieces that are based on ancient carvings found in the Scottish Isles. Easy to follow rules. Easy to learn. Ideal for older children. More enjoyable than chess although like chess, you really do have to plan your moves ahead. The linen playing surface rather than a board is a nice touch and makes the game easily portable. Top marks to National Museums Scotland.
