Salter Oven Thermometer, 50-300°C Dial Temperature Gauge

I think this is a much better oven thermometer than the previous make i had. Its easier to read, it might be more accurate and it has better positioning options. I'm pleased with the purchase.

Sit's in the oven, and I like the hanging feature.. The only annoyance is that I think the hand inside might get stuck and so sometimes it doesn't quite move round and it needs a tap. Which would be fine, if it wasn't made of metal and piping hot to touch, so you end up taking it out of the oven, giving it a tape with a spoon or with oven gloves on and putting it back in. A bit fiddly.

Does what its supposed to, looks very smart too.

Bought this as I was convinced my brand new oven was not getting up to temperature. Long story short, ended up with an engineer out. He verified it, and commented that this thermometer was completely accurate compared to his professional one

I bought this thermometer because I was sure that my oven was over temperature from the indicated readings. I used this thermometer to allow me to compare temperatures set on the oven to those provided by the thermometer. I could not find anywhere which actually told me the accuracy of the thermometer itself but I believe another reviewer suggested 5% accuracy which I have no reason to dispute. Regardless of the type of shelving you have in your oven you should have no difficulty in either sitting the thermometer on its side on the shelf or hanging it from the shelf. The display is large and clear so no difficulty to see it through the oven door - once I had given it a good clean! I found that it was easier to accurately read it by shining a torch through the oven door - but then I am getting old and my eyesight is not what it was. With regards to taking readings you need to be aware that the thermometer does not reach oven temperature immediately. The process I used was as follows: 1) Set temperature on oven. 2) Monitor the thermostat light until it goes off. 3) Wait until the needle on the thermometer stops moving and then take that value. By taking the thermometer value against the set value for a range of oven temperatures I was able to produce a calibration chart. It was interesting to find that the oven was out by as much as 30 deg. C. With the calibration chart I can now set the oven to a lower setting and hey presto, no burnt food and saving electricity too.

The price of this thermometer is very reasonable and Salter is a known good brand, but personally I'm just not convinced of the accuracy of this thermometer. I have an electric (non-fan) oven and bought this to see how much the temperature dial on my oven was "out" compared to an accurate reading. I assumed that my oven would be maybe 5-10 degrees out either side of the desired temperature, however this thermometer said that I was 30 degrees out!! For example, I was cooking McCain Gastro Oven Chips to go with a nice steak, the packet instructions stated 25-30 mins at 220 degrees. I duly set the oven to 220, but the thermometer was registering 250 degrees!! I went with the normal oven settings, and the chips were perfect in the specified time, at 220 on the oven - if they had been cooking at 250 degrees (as the thermometer stated) they would have been burned to ashes after about 15 minutes. I'm just not convinced it's accurate and found it a distraction from the way I'm used to cooking. It could be perfectly accurate, but I doubt it - there's just no way those chips would have cooked in the stated time at 250 degrees. Some other reviewers swear by it, for me personally, I've binned it as I don't trust the readings. I've rated it 3 stars because I can't say for certain whether it is defective or if my oven is indeed 30 degrees out - but I rather suspect that the thermometer is the issue because the oven temps I use with the food instructions always work out. I just don't believe it's that much of a difference in temperature that the thermometer is recording. No way.

Very clear dial and easy to read. Bought because it is Celsius only whereas many are primarily F making C temps hard to read. At the moment I’m finding it difficult to stand it upright on shelf - usually falls over when the oven door is closed! Easy to hang on side bars but my oven window is fairly small so often have to open door to check temp. However, overall I’m quite happy with purchase.

The Salter Oven Thermometer was exactly what I was after. My fan oven is a basic model, and I found that setting the temperatures was a bit vague. I did not expect high accuracy, but was quite surprised by how well it worked. It also has a clear and easy-to-read gauge face.

I have hanged this permanently in my oven because the thermostate is broken. It works perfectly.
