It seems to have a fairly strong magnet and is encased in a sturdy plastic wand. It works as intended if you paint a nail and then immediately hover the large magnet above the nail for 30 to 60 seconds. That's all you need to create the lovely holographic effect. I found I needed to use it for each coat to get a deep effect. The small circle does not attract the metal shavings but repels. So you can use it to push color.
