But in the context of your question no it is not 'salt', which is sodium chloride. When used in cooking reduce the normal salt by half and add, depending on quantity of food, half to one teaspoon of MSG. This has the effect of increasing the perceived flavour of the food. I use it in cheese sauces to make them taste cheesier, also in soups and stews to increase meaty flavour. I hope this helps. P.S adding more than about a half to one teaspoon of MSG does NOT result in increased flavour. **Q: How do you know how much to use?** A: I just sprinkle a little on towards the end of cooking to taste. It's also worth noting that by weight it actually contains less Sodium than regular salt. **Q: Hi. It is suitable for vegetarians?** A: I understand that this is suitable for vegetarians. **Q: How many calories are in this please?** A: There are 282 calories / 100g ## Frequently Bought Together - MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE 454G/1LB - SPIRITCROWD Shaoxing Cooking Wine (For Cooking Only) 700ml 14% Alc./ Vol - LUCKY BOAT Thick Chow Mein Noodles 900G | Restaurant Quality | No.1 Thick Noodles | Egg Free Noodles | Bulk Noodles | Stir-Fry | Noodles | Vegan | Wheat Noodles | Chinese Noodles | 900G (PACK OF 1) --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.jp/products/49419181-pure-monosodium-glutamate-454g-msg-umami-seasoning-cooking-powder](https://www.desertcart.jp/products/49419181-pure-monosodium-glutamate-454g-msg-umami-seasoning-cooking-powder) --- *Product available on Desertcart Japan* *Store origin: JP* *Last updated: 2026-10-23*
