OWLTRA In-/Outdoor Electric Rodent Trap

Previously, I was only accustomed to the traditional rat/mouse traps. The ones you have to be careful not to smash your fingers in! Our pest control guy uses the traditional traps and the bait boxes with the sticky pads. Not having dealt with a lot of rats, at least ones in the main living areas of my home, I wasn't certain about the best way to "erraticate" the pesky rodent(s). Sure, there are your typical rats/mice in the garage and crawspace,etc. Our pest guy typically addressed those "ratskills". Those traps are ok in those areas. Out of sight, out of mind, right? But, we had one enter our domain, and that was not cool at all! I wondered...what's the best solution? An electonic mouse trap? I must admit that I was a little skeptical when I purchased this, considering the price. Would it be just a gimmick? I questioned whether it was cheaply built, and whether or not it would really work. However, when it arrived, I found that it was constructed way better than I had expected. I was actually impressed! But, I still wondered if it would work. Well, that question was answered literally overnight! After setting it up the afternoon it arrived, the very next morning, the result was in! Sorry, Mr Rat! The governor granted no clemency for you! About the product: It is very simple to use. It takes 4 D-cell batteries, or you can use the included USB-C power cable (wall wart not included, but, hey, just use one of your extra USB-A phone plug you have laying around like I did). I used a small dab of peanut butter in the bait tray. Put the lid on. Power it on and set it against the wall in the area where you saw the little critter, or evidence of their activity. It has a light that flashes and a buzzer that beeps when one has been caught. When that happens, they are done! To empty it, you just turn the power switch to off. Open the top (the top comes off easily - not in a bad way, easily) and dump out the critter in the waste bin, or, you can have a proper burial if you should so desire! You do you! It's really that simple! In summary, it's a very effective product. Easy to use. We'll built. Great features for what it is. Much nicer than the Victor product I purchased at my local big box store, and it was less expensive. I believe it's a great investment and I will probably buy more of these to monitor other areas of my home. I highly recommend this product to others! Now, let's see if he has any relatives! I originally bought one of these electronic traps to catch a rat I had seen nibbling on the birdseed that had fallen from my feeder. A friend had recommended it after replacing all the duct work rats had destroyed. The repair folks has suggested it to him. I liked the fact that this trap was humane in addition to being easy to use. I had had a rat chew the window washer tubing in my car a few years before and I wanted to try and avoid another occurrence. I also had an equally if not bigger problem with the squirrel population that had exploded. The cute little critters I used to love have become so destructive, I was hoping this rat zapper thing might also work for them, although I didn’t think the opening would be large enough. Don’t get me wrong, I love all animals, but once they become destructive and frequently, my love for any creature goes out the door. The squirrels are so active, they soon knocked the trap over causing the protective cover to come off. They even gnawed on the plastic housing. I was concerned the trap was a gonner as it had been raining, but after I cleaned it up, it seemed to work. This time I put a heavy brick on top of it so the critters couldn’t mess it up. I initially used a little peanut butter as bait, but caught nothing. I switched to a small piece of cheese and viola! My first catch….a squirrel! I was surprised and thrilled at the same time. I also hoped it would be a deterrent to all of his relatives. To be sure, I baited it again, but this time with a little birdseed. I caught 2 more squirrels and in one day! I doubt I will curtail the squirrel population with any speed, but maybe they will wise up and go somewhere else. While it saddens me to have to resort to this kind of rodent control, I am happy that I can do so in a quick and humane way with literally no mess. In case you were wondering, I never did catch that rat who hopefully has found another place to forage. I have only had this zapper for a few weeks so who knows how long it will last, but right now I’m very happy with the ‘surprise’ results. In fact, I might even buy another one!

I really wanted this trap to work. With rats running around outside my house (seemingly taunting us, walking right in front of our family as we enjoyed our patio) I finally bit the bullet and bought this one despite the price. I followed the instructions exactly. Fresh batteries, switch turned on, trap properly set. I got a "green light" and a beep to indicate that the trap was set up properly. I also put the weather resistant cover over the unit. I placed it immediately next to a wall where I knew the rats were traveling, since I could literally see them walking along it. I even tried putting food around the trap first to get them used to it, as recommended. For bait, I started with peanut butter and eventually upgraded to Nutella. The rats were still not impressed. They got into the feeder, ate the food, and walked away completely unharmed. How do I know? While cleaning the trap, I could clearly see tiny rat footprints right in front of the food tray. They treated this thing like a free snack bar. After trying to cleverly re-locate the trap a couple of times, it almost became like a free rat food truck. Also--the tray inside the unit isn't easy to clean. It's hard to clean around the (pretty sharp) edge of the electrical plate, especially in the corners of the unit. At this point, it’s just $50 wasted. If you’re looking for something that actually traps rats instead of feeding them, this isn’t it.

If you have Mice as I do you want the largest zapper you can get! This one fits the bill! I've purchased quite a few zappers over the years and all but one still work. The problem with my first purchases was I thought the zappers would be larger so be careful and look at the specifications before ordering. The Mice here are quite a bit larger than what I would consider to be an average Mouse and they will NOT fit into the standard "Mouse zappers". They won't even try to go in them. So think BIG and get a "Rat" zapper. This Rat Zapper is the second of this size but this one is rated for Outdoor use AND comes with the ability to power it from a standard 5 VDC USB power supply (make sure it's rated for more than 1 Amp, I suggest at least a 2 Amp charger). It uses four 1.5 VDC "D" Cell batteries which can get expensive unless we use a rechargeable "D" Cell battery. I'm using high wattage 1.5 VDC LiOn rechargeable batteries which have a charge cycle of over 1,000. So invest wisely, don't use NiCd batteries (voltage too low). After receiving the Rat Zapper I followed all the instructions and put the bait in the bait cup (few pieces of dog food kibble). I installed four D Cell batteries and placed the unit by the side of my house last night. It has a cover that must be place on top for outdoor use. Don't forget to do that! This morning the light on the unit was blinking "green" which indicates a Mouse decided to visit Zapper House during the night. Sure enough. There it was. So easy to dispose of the rodent. Turn it off, pull the top off and dump the dead mouse. It's that simple. Reload the bait cup, put the top back on, place the unit where you want it, turn it on, put the plastic cover back on and wait till the next rodent visits Zapper Hotel. The build quality is very good, very sturdy unit which I think will provide years of use, it's very safe just follow the instructions and turn it off before you take it apart (tool less). Suggest using some kind of dry food for the rodents such as dog kibble. They will find it. No sticky peanut butter. If you want an effective rat zapper I highly suggest this product!

This trap works great, I have caught a number of rodents including one that barely fit in the trap as shown in the photo. Cheese seems to work best, put some in the bait tray in the trap then sprinkle it inside the trap and in front of it to lure them in. Seems like the more residence time the critter has in the trap the better the chance it does not get out. Just for the record for nearly 30 years we never saw a rat, then 2 things happened. We had to relocate two black snakes that were getting into the neigbors house, the snakes were keeping the population down. Then our other neighbor moved out and rented the house; the renters were not very good at keeping thier trashcans clean and organized, both of which lead to an increase in rat sightings, our dogs have even caught a few, but the Owltra is now ahead of them.

I have a TNR feral cat I feed outside. Mice have been setting off my security cameras eating his food. They are quite brazen and are taunty me throughout the night. Yes, the cat has been guilty of dereliction of his duties. And to think he gets such great food and treats. Goof! Oh I guess that he is playing cat and mouse. I tried wooden snap traps and fancy nasty looking snap traps. No mice and no bait the next morning! Several snapped fingers later, I decided to research cat safe humane mouse traps. I want to kill them fast not torture them. So, no poison or sticky traps for these mice. After many hours of researching devices that quickly electrocute the mice came out winners. I was thrilled to find this device that can be used outside. Others I found were inside only. This takes 4 D batteries not included so you may want to get batteries at the same time you order this device or use the USB connecting inside to charge it. It arrived the next day in time for evening use. There are instructions to put it together. At first, I thought it might be too much to take the batteries out and disemble it to get the dead mouse out each time. I used to throw the mouse and trap in the trash. I actually find it is fast and easy to empty and reset the device. I wear nonlatex gloves to be sanitary with the dead mice. There is a green light that indicates the device is active. The green light flashes and a beep sounds when a mouse is caught. I put the device outside that night and checked it 2 hours later. Success the light was flashing. One fat mouse was dead inside. And the bait was gone. Now, I wonder did another mouse go inside and crawl over the dead mouse to eat the bait? The dead mouse was facing the bait so it had not eaten it. Ruthless mouse! The bait I use is peanut butter and it goes into a well at the front of the device. On the other end is an entryway for the mouse. The mouse sets off a lethal charge as it enters and steps on metal plates. It seems fast. At least faster than getting trapped and not dieing quickly or having a cat play with it then eat it. I have gotten a mouse every night since. I can see and hear on my security cameras when a mouse has been caught/killed. I try not to watch the mouse enter and not come back out. I recommend this device. I may purchase another as I live by mountains with plenty of mice. I will never completely get rid out the mice. If they don't taunt me and they stay out of the house we can coexist. Apparently the cat thinks this way too! Edit - 4 mice down. I am experiencing challenges removing the battery cover. I find it difficult to remove now. The green light is not blinking nor is the beep sounding to alert me that a mouse has been inside. I returned the device due to this malfunction. Fortunately I have not had any mice taunty me again. During the Amazon spring sale this device was discounted. I have purchased another and hope it does not malfunction. I shall update this review after receiving and using the new device. Even given the malfunction I have cautiously recommended this device to friends. We rarely get rain so I may try the cheaper ones without covers if needed in the future and the new device does not malfunction .

Best electronic trap yet! I've used a few of this kind of trap for rats, and they're annoying to set up and seem to only work a few times. This one was the best designed (I'm using it, reluctantly, for the chipmunks that are destroying my garden despite all my attempts to keep them away with sprays, etc.) and easiest to use, and it got a chipmunk the first night out. Easy to empty too. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny. Even comes with a waterproof cover.

This is a good idea in practice, as a more humane way to eliminate a rodent, however it did not work for me. I had a rat in my attic. I have no idea how it got up there tonthis day, but I could hear it scratching at night and/or when it was quiet. He could not get into the actual house/living area. I purchased this device and I honestly thought he was going to be done for the day I set it up, but boy was I wrong. I also bought an indoor Eufy camera to watch/monitor it. I set this trap up there and set the camera up in the attic facing the trap. It is 100% complete darkness up there when the light is off, but the cam was a PTZ cam with excellent night vision. I added american cheese and peanut butter with some fresh grated parmesan on a piece of tortilla in the bait trough (figured his last meal might as well be a good one). I also added a very small piece just inside the entry of the trap and a small piece just outside in front of the trap. Within no time I saw him eat the piece outside of the trap, as well as sniff all around the trap, focussing heavily on the vents right near the bait trough. Every so often he would return and sniff around the trap and look at the entry, but not enter. Finally maybe 5-7 days in (already too long for me) he reached in and grabbed the small piece inside the door. So I started thinking today is the day. Then over the next week he was beginning to go in further and further each day, reaching about 3/4 of his body in the entry at the peak point. However, I had to put a firm deadline that if he doesn't go all the way in TODAY and get zapped, I am going snap trap on his azz. Well, the deadline came and he never went all the way in, so I went up there and set a snap trap, turned off the light and closed the entry to the attic. I went outside to check the mail or something real quick, came back in and sat on my couch and then heard a noise and got a notification from the camera. Checked it and saw him get snapped. Within 10 minutes of placing the snap trap, he was done for. So, my point is, while this trap might work, in like a month to who knows, maybe 3 months, in the end a good ole fashioned $5 snap trap worked swiftly and immediately. One after thought of mine, is that they are in some ways much smarter than they are given credit for. I realized that I had not set the trap against any sort of wall, so he was always able to walk around all 4 sides of the trap and the top too. So I think he realized this was a box that went nowhere. A dead end. Perhaps if it was against a wall where at least one side of it he could not investigate, see or access, he might then think this is an opening into further exploration, like an opening into a wall or something, and not just a dead end box. Regardless, it ended up being the snap trap FTW in literally 10 minutes time of being set up. I gave this unit 3 stars because I'm sure it probably does work, and maybe more likely if set up against a wall. However, I think what would probably be the best idea for this is to have an opening/entry on both ends that they can see right through and out the other side, with the bait trough in the center/middle. I think a mouse or rat would be more inclined to go in if they can see that it's just a tube/hall with an exit ahead of them, and then when they get inside to the middle point, bzzzzzz. Oh, and let me tell you, I read about them and everything says they have good low light vision. I have to say they have excellent NO light vision. I watched this thing easily run along a rafter, and turn exactly when the rafter turned, and also hop from one thing to another. So either they have echo location or sonar, or maybe they emit infrared from their eyes, because they can SEE in complete darkness.

Muy sorprendido con el funcionamiento. Cumple con su cometido. Ideal este modelo dado que tiene un leve pitido alterno en el tiempo que te avisa del premio... Ideal para huecos escondidos o falsos techos. Así te olvidas de andar mirando. La información del fabricante es mínima, revisar mis fotos donde subo el manual y las características. Se puede desconectar el pitido alterno. Lastima tener que usarlo, pero por lo menos los bichos se van al otro barrio de una manera más limpia. Recomiendo meter como cebo queso, es infalible...

Zuerst war ich skeptisch. Aber nach 2 Tagen lag die erste Ratte tot im Kasten. Nach weiteren 8 Tagen hatte ich weitere 5 gefangen. Als Köder hatte ich kleine Schnittkäsestücke mit Nutella verwendet. Wichtig ist die Anordnung, die Köder sind so anzuordnen, dass die Ratte auf 2 Metallscheiben stehen muss, erst dann wird der Elektroschlag ausgeführt. Toll ist auch die Regenabdeckung.

Consegnato nei tempi stabiliti. Dopo 3 giorni in cui ho addescato il ratto, permettendogli di mangiare le esche nei pressi e dentro la trappola (ovviamente spenta), ieri sera ho attivato il dispositivo che ha fatto puntualmente e in maniera egregia il suo lavoro. Ratto fulminato e facilmente smaltito e trappola pulita velocemente, grazie alla praticità del sistema di apertura del dispositivo. Ottimo. Consiglio vivamente anche per ratti di dimensioni importanti, come nel mio caso.
