It works by heating a little element on the inside. If the element is exposed to combustible gas, it gets hotter, and that indicates to the machine that combustible gasses are present. Any combustible gas should trigger the sensor. LEL is an abbreviation for Lower Explosive Limit, so any potentially explosive gas should be sensed by the machine. Having said that, I would suggest testing it in the presence of a small amount of hydrogen first, just to be sure.
