A powerful, heart-breaking read!
Diane Jeffrey’s new novel, The Silent Friend, is a powerful, heart-breaking read. I’ve read all of her books, and I think this is one of her best, it’s also quite different to what she has written before. Focusing on two main characters, Sandy and Laura, Diane Jeffrey, explores how the aftermath of a horrific tragedy, affects those involved. Sandy and Laura both begin to communicate after the event takes place, but what Sandy doesn’t make quite clear to Laura, is how she is really connected to the tragedy. Will the truth damage their growing friendship when it eventually comes out? Will Sandy ever be able to tell Laura the full story?I thought Diane Jeffrey developed her characters exceptionally well in this book. It’s horrifying watching a similar tragedy unfold on the news, but it must be even more so for those who were there. In the aftermath of the devastating event, Sandy launches a website to help people who were there, to find someone to talk to, and this is how she meets Laura. But it’s here that I don’t want to talk too much about the plot as I don’t want to spoil anything for you.I would describe this book as more of a slow-burner. There are some tense scenes, but this is a book which tackles more of the psychological issues connected to the tragedy. I’m a huge fan of character-driven novels, and I would say that The Silent Friend definitely falls into that category. Laura and Sandy both kept me completely engrossed in the story, and Diane Jeffrey paints clearly how they have been affected by the tragedy that has happened to them. This is a book which I’m sure will keep readers thinking, and the characters will stay in your head long after finishing it. I thought the friendship between Sandy and Laura was developed really well, and it does remind you that some good can come out of the darkness.Diane Jeffrey has written another brilliant book, and I am looking forward to reading what she writes next.

Breath-taking
This is one of those books that the less you know about the storyline, the better.I have to admit that what I got from this book was different from what I was expecting. There are some secrets and lies but it didn’t feel like a psychological thriller. I’ve seen some others liken it more to a drama, maybe a psychological drama might be a better representation? Either way though, it is a brilliant read and one I will be recommending to everyone. The story flicks between the two main characters Laura and Sandy. I found myself warm to both women very quickly. Their lives are turned upside down after a tragic event, of which my heart went out to them both. It is a story that I think will give the reader much food for thought. When you read it for yourself you will understand. I liked how the whole storyline played out and the epilogue was all that I had hoped it to be. I’m sorry if I’m being quite vague but less really is more with this book. The Silent Friend is one powerful and gut punching read. The horrors of the event that bring the two main characters in to contact, wow, just wow! I kept having to remind myself to breath as I felt like I was there seeing it all for myself. My emotions were all over the place as I tried to put myself into both women’s shoes. If you only read one book this year, then this one has to be it. Breath-taking!

Addictive, intriguing and heart-stopping thriller
I love it when you get a book that gives very little away in the synopsis. It's like going in blind and for The Silent Friend, this was perfect. I got a story that pulled me in very quickly and led me on a journey that I didn't expect at all.Given the slim synopsis, my review will also be a bit on the vague side. The story is told from two perspectives. One from a woman who has lost two of her friends and the other from a mother. The two characters share their experiences of an event that happens in France. Both are victims. Both are suffering. Both feel guilty. The story is told over a timeline that is shown over the course of a few months before the event, the event itself and then onwards. It gives the thoughts and feeling of both women and of those who are in immediate contact with them. This keeps the character list small and gives a more intimate account. There is a psychological aspect to this, but not the usual crime thriller one. Yes, a crime was committed, but it is the psychological impact that the women deal with that becomes the major thread of the story for me. The author very craftily draws the reader into the lives of the women and then delivers some wonderful heart-stopping moments. Things suddenly linked and left me shocked as I didn't really see them coming. This was such an addictive read. From initially not really knowing what story was going to unfold I soon found myself flying through this. The author wove a story that is full of intrigue but from different perspectives. It gives an idea of what people go through after a traumatic event and how they cope with living afterwards.I loved this story so much. It had me with my heart in my mouth at times and also with the odd tear in my eye as the full picture was brought out. This is one for readers who like a crime mystery read and it is one I would definitely recommend.

A five star read - gripping - read it in three days!!
Laura’s dream holiday turns into a nightmare when she suddenly becomes a victim of an atrocious incident. Laura seeks help and turns to a friend online who shows her understanding, support and hope. Is all as it seems? Time will tell as we journey with Laura through her recovery. As an avid follower of Diane Jeffrey’s books, it’s safe to say that this is a completely different style of book to what the author usually writes. I loved that she tried something new and it definitely worked. I was SO gripped. I grew so fond of the characters, and even characters who didn’t feature as much as others. I felt like a champion in Laura’s corner, willing her on to make her recovery and move forward with her life. This was definitely a five star read. Each book continues to get better and better.

A compelling psychological thriller guaranteed to chill you to the bone
“The Silent Friend” , the eagerly awaited latest novel from Diane Jeffrey is a psych thriller like no other! It takes us to a very dark place and explores our deepest fears. Unlike most works of this genre, the plot is entirely believable because it hits close to home. This book will grip you to your core , leaving you shaken and stirred. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
