things to know
preface, we've owned the a7i, a7ii, a7iii, a7rii, and, a7riii, a couple of weeks ago I was sitting with the a7iii, a7riii, and a7rii and chose to keep the a7rii for my personal use (over a new a7iii and a7riii), my wife chose to keep the a7riii.The a7Rii and a7Riii share the same sensor, so the resulting files are effectively identical (and big, you get 12 raw files per 1GB). The colors out of the R series are different to the other a7 cameras, much nicer in tone and depth, especially coupled with good glass. I stress, there's literally no difference to the raw files you get out of both the rii and riii. The a7RIV has a bigger sensor again, and can easily expose flaws in lenses, so all in the a7rii and a7riii perform better with most lenses and well enough (or better than needed) for 99% of people. In the end all it boils down to really is battery (and arguably touch screen, updated software, second card), if you're using lenses with autofocus and internal motors to change the aperture, doing long exposures with noise reduction on, have the camera prefocusing, then you'll greatly appreciate the batteries on the a7Riii, if however this doesn't apply, for example if you're in manual mode most of the time, or using purely manual lenses like the amazing voigtlander se and apo series then the A7Rii is a great purchase. You will be happy, and have an extra £1000+ in your pocket.I am content and very happy with it, highly recommend.

Amazing detail; check value over A7Riii and later etc and AF not as good for moving subjects
Original review: Bought so I could get in-camera stabilization and a better grip / egonomics over my A6300. I was planning to use it as an 18Mp APS-C camera but have been seduced by the resolution and added a 35/2.8 FF for walkaround.Mostly use it with a 70-300 for wildlife and long shots, and 50 macro. But its the resolution that is the difference here: quick JPG attached shows the cropping potential even on a snatched shot.IMHO probably better value than an A6600, but note the latter has better focusing in exchange for APS-C and less resolution. Otherwise consider an A7iii+ or A7Riii+ if you can afford the extra 50% in cost (as of 2020)...Update 2024: replaced this last year by a nearly new A7Riv to enable LA-EA5 converter support for legacy Minolta and Sony A lenses. Amazed to see the A7Rii now priced at a grand more than I paid! I recommend the newer models for more features, or the A7cr for compact performance. The Rii sensor is still good though.

Not UK based company!!!
Name of dealer is deceiving. They are not UK based, the product came from Hong Kong. The box contained no instructions or disc. It is a good price, but the country of origin and the fact the instructions is annoying. Details that it's technically a grey import would be honest. The camera does appear to be genuine though. The box is in Chinese and so is the indication of place of manufacturing. Very upsetting.

Moved from a Cannon 6d and very pleased.
Bought this as a small handed woman how now loves this camera body. Great to hold and buttons all programmable and in places I want them to be. Was using a 6d and prefer this camera. Currently using adapted canon lenses with metabones and happy but will change out lenses.Favourite aspect of this camera is the electronic view finder. I used to have to mess around with reading glasses but can now do everything through the view finder and don’t use LCD screen. So much easier.Fantastic camera just read any camera review. I have nothing bad to say about it.

Good camera, good price, but returned for a refund.
I hadn't been going to review this camera because I chose to return it, not because there was anything specifically wrong with it but primarily because of my comfort with it. This camera is is undoubtedly technically a good camera, but it was not for me at this time. Tempted by the Prime sale, I bought it at a very good price, but when I received it and tried to use it I found that the menu system was confusing and I had to search everywhere for particular settings. If I had had time to get used to the camera I might have become comfortable with it but since I had only a limited time to try it out, after a few attempts and increasing frustration, I decided I couldn't take the risk, so gave up and returned it.

Absolutely love this camera
Absolutely love this camera. However you will need to get used to the focusing system as when you're using the focusing points it's not as straight forward. The camera is slightly slower than what you'd expect so if you're going for sports photography or events where you have to be fast then you're better off getting the A7SII. The A7R II is more for art photography and slower paced things.
