Contact with wood ash or direct flame will destroy this, as the ash reacts chemically and lowers the melting point of the ceramic. Cements are available to put a protective shell on the fibre blanket , if that''s any good for your intended use.

Will it keep heat off lights built into a register plate above a wood burner at side of a flu

It may do but goes against current uk legislation, a reputable Hetas registered installer would not sign this off and could potentially void your building insurance.

Could it be used for campervan insulation ?

Yes it could but it would be an expensive way to do it and your not trying to protect your van from a 1000 degrees centIgrade. Buy some recycled plastic loft insulation much thicker, will muffle sound and seriously more for your money.
