They fit over the top of the cushions, underneath the throws I have for ease of cleaning. They wash well and are 100% absorbent - nothing got through to the cushions underneath. They are not stretchy - don't think they were ever meant to be. There are white cotton 'wings' for a better word on each end which would tuck in under the mattress to secure.
