Detailed and evocative.
The author takes the reader on an evocative journey through Greek myths and mythology in 171 short logically ordered chapters. The book would be better titled โGreek Myths and Mythologyโ, for detailed explanations and potential historic origins are provided for each paragraph of actual story. Comparisons are also made between differing versions of the same myth. The author provides a captivating insight into ancient history and the human phykey. The book is not intended as an introduction into the subject but is a fascinating read for those with a basic knowledge seeking greater detail and depth. The book is also well suited to those seeking a definitive reference, for not one myth appears to have been missed and every paragraph of story is referenced to its original source. But be warned; the authors use of English is complex and articulated, I would suggest that readers not capable of attaining high grades in English Language may struggle to fully comprehend.

A definitive guide - but not for the dabbler
This book has stood the test of time and you will soon see why. Robert Graves knowledge of Greek Mythology is very extensive. However, if you are looking for an easy read or some sort of introduction to Greek Mythology this is not the book for you. Unless you are a serious student of the subject it is extremely difficult to keep up with all the names and the endless relationships that seemed to have occurred. Even if you just read the myths and not the large amount of footnotes written by Robert Graves it is still fairly difficult to follow in places. Probably better as a source of reference than a book to read from cover to cover.

Comprehensive but quite 'dry'
Thorough, comprehensive, full of researched facts supporting each story. But... like wading through treacle! I decided I really should know some of the Greek Myths as they permeate so much of white western culture. So, I bought the 'definitive' guide. This is a book for true scholars and has all the stories and also Graves scholarly research and interpretation related to each of the tales. Frankly it is hard going and more a book for serious scholars than run of the mill readers.

'The Greek Myths' Robert Graves
I would highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Classical Mythology; it is comprehensive and is very easy to use. You can use the references to find a specific myth, if you have a particular interest, or read it as an extentended collection of the stories. It contains all of the Greek myths together, and told very well. I would, however, caution academic or literary users, as if you need to know the sources for each myth Graves does not always reference them. For this kind of use, I would reccommend Pierre Grimal's 'Dictionary of Classical Mythology'. The book also contains a map of the Greek world and map showing sites mentioned in the text, helping you visualize and understand the relative geographies of the myths. I really like this book, and after buying my own copy bought one for a friend. A must for lovers of mythology. :D

An excellent reference book/
With the currant fashion amongst women authors for stories about female heroines from ancient Greece, Robert Graves's โThe Greek Myths",is the ideal companion. This scholarly work provides information about many of the characters being written about today.

Just simply wonderful !!
What an amazing book. If you are interested in the magical arts then this book will more than aid you on your journey. I am particularly interested in the Golden Dawn method and wish I had found this book before I started studying. As a result of buying this book I can now put my esoteric knowledge into an easy, methodical and ordered way. An essential read with extraordinary and comprehensive notes. It explains the Greek pantheon of Gods starting with the 12 Olympians and covers all the stories of their children. Excellent and an essential read!!!!
