Learn from the expert
What can you say Beth Chatto was a genius her advice is invaluable. Written in a lovely style itโs just like a friend talking to you. Having met her on several occasions in her gardens she was a wonderful lady to talk to, warm and genuine. If you have never visited her garden at Elmstead Market near Colchester please do youโll come away informed and inspired.

Written primarily for the US southern states....
It's important to note that this is primarily written for the American market. Something I didn't realise until it arrived and I realised that a lot of the plants are unsuitable for a northern climate. Bit annoying as I've previously bought the book as a gift and only flipped through it. Not a complete waste of money but it's disheartening to see what lovely things can be grown in the great heat of a Californian patch of shade!

Excellent advice for drought-tolerant planting
This book has beautiful photos, and contains lots of technical information on plants that work, and what those plants contribute to the overall garden. It is also an interesting book to read about Beth Chatto's development of the gardens over time. Anyone that is trying to reduce their water usage in a dry climate should consider buying this book. It's the best English (country, not language) guide I have found for this type of gardening. I've also found some fantastic books from Olivier Filippi, who along with his wife, is a French dry garden expert. His books complement Beth's book, so consider them as well.
