Matisse
This is a wonderful book for Primary age children. I used it as a starting point to demonstrate to children how they could takle their own projects on artists of their choice. They loved it.

engaging
It is hard to find the book about art which appeals to a very young audience and which tells about painters in a simple engaging way. The illustrations are very colourful and contain photographs, Matisse drawings, children's drawings.

Is this really written by a child?
The premise of this book is that it is written as a school project. The trouble is, the content is so poor for a published art book, that I am unable to decide whether it really is a school project or whether this is a literary device to appeal to child readers. It doesn't work. I really wanted a book about Matisse's later cut out collages to inspire my own children, and this isn't it. The cut out drawings are only briefly covered and all the way through Matisse's life is compared to that of the narrator, about whom I have absolutely no interest. If this is a school project, I say well done to the child, this is an excellent school project, but I was expecting to buy a book by an art historian so I hope you can understand why I was disappointed.
