Yes its c alley a Magnetic discloser, it is a thin green film like , as youfass a maggit over over the film it do show\ a magnetic fields present..the film works with ultra fine magnetite powder. the film is available easily.

Q: could the magnet paint combination be used outside ie on a playground

The MAGNETITE paint is quite stable under normal conditions BUT be sure you DO use a good paint base, I have done what you are doing sadly after some time the black magnetite DID oxidise due to acids (natural) and strong UV from the Sun, you can buy WUSTITE which is available from Ebay and Amazon, I honestly think WUSTITE is better than Magnetite, also the WUSTITE is a good rich black and will NOT degrade so simply as Magnetite> I hope this is of some help to you.On final tip, try for an epoxy base paint it will last many years.

Magnetite powder is not magnetic. It only creates a metalic surface which magnets will adhere to. You need several coats of a pva solution of magnetite powder to create a surface which will hold, for example, a fridge magnet.
