INSIGHTFUL AND ILLUMINATING
Apart from the fact that Vasari's painting replaced Leonardo's painting of The Battle of Anghiari , Vasari may be forgiven as his Lives of the Artists is both insightful and illuminating on each of the painters , sculptors and architects he describes of his era and times. A must read therefore for anyone who loves the Renaissance and wants to know what it was really like to be there.

A masterpiece
I bought this to help with a talk I am giving on the Florentine Renaissance. I am finding the book really interesting as it provides insights into the masters way of life. It is very humorous at times and 'chatty' which helps bring things to life and provide useful anecdotes. He obviously adored Michelangelo. The section on Giotto was the most surprising as I really felt that I knew him and really liked him not only as an artist but as a human being by the time I was finished. Although no doubt there are many instances where the truth may be slightly different it is a fascinating read.

One of the first and most important books about artists...
This book, was written in the 15th century, and help coin the term 'renaissance'It's written by a well known, less important artist, about all the famous artists in Italy at the time,If intuitive biographies about renaissance Italian artists is what you want? Then this is the best book for you...

Vasar Rules OK
An excellent translation of Vasari giving a particular insight both into Vasari's biographies of the great artists but also to his theory of art - it may not be a contemporary theory but it is immensely interesting.

This gift was enjoyed
This book was a Christmas gift I gave to my sister, a retired art teacher. She liked it very much. Based on her expertise in art, I'll assume a five-star rating.

The lives of the artists
it's fundamental to understand Renaissance art. The Artist as a VIP begins with Vasari.

' Most history books can be dull so this book is par for the course
The historical significance of this book is huge because most experts agree that this is the first art history book produced. It has some interesting anecdotes and life stories. But it can get very repetitive because renaissance Italian art only had one subject -- religion. And I mean no disrespect, but it's chapter after chapter of descriptions of 'He painted this martyr and that saint at this and that chapel.' Most history books can be dull so this book is par for the course. If you like art history this book is a good read and I do recommend it.
