A Wizard of Earthsea (A Puffin Book) : Le Guin, Ursula: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: A Timeless and Thought-Provoking Fantasy Classic - A Wizard of Earthsea is a beautifully written and deeply immersive fantasy novel that stands out as one of the genre's finest. Ursula K. Le Guin’s storytelling is rich, poetic, and layered with meaning, making it much more than just a tale of magic and adventure. The story follows Ged, a young boy with immense magical potential, as he journeys from humble beginnings to the prestigious wizarding school on the island of Roke. What sets this book apart from typical fantasy is its focus on the internal struggles Ged faces—his arrogance, mistakes, and eventual path to redemption. Le Guin explores themes of balance, humility, and the weight of one’s choices in a way that feels universal and timeless. The world-building is subtle but incredibly vivid. Le Guin crafts a vast archipelago, each island with its own culture and history, all tied together by the underlying force of magic. The magic system, based on the true names of things, feels natural and grounded in the world’s philosophy, adding a sense of mystery and wonder to every page. Despite being written for a younger audience, this book speaks to readers of all ages. It’s introspective and mature, offering lessons about power, identity, and self-discovery that resonate long after the final chapter. For anyone who appreciates thoughtful, elegant fantasy, A Wizard of Earthsea is a must-read. It’s a cornerstone of the genre that helped shape modern fantasy, and even after decades, it remains as enchanting and meaningful as ever. Review: Great book - Brilliant story.

Awesome
VERY engaging book, beautifully descriptive writing style both visually and emotionally. Le Guin creates an awesome world with a really good feeling magic system, as well as a very nice plethora of people, making the world feel so big and diverse even in such a small book. Recommend. The quality of the print is good as well, good text size and font face (even if on the larger side), cover was nice and came undamaged. Although I can't find any other sellers of the later books in the series of this publication, so if you're looking for a set, try a different one.

A wonderful tale.
A beautifully written book. Magic, excitement, friendship, fear and self-discovery; there are many themes. All in the context of Earthsea, a believable world that it is easy to identify with. My only regret is that I wasn’t given this to read as a child.

Probably the best of the Earthsea novels which I have read
Probably the best of the Earthsea novels which I have read. The characters and plotline are totally convincing, and Le Guin's writing is outstandingly poetic in many places.

The book arrived safe and sound and Mother Earth said to me it will indulge any reader with thoughts of fantasy . It s condition was as described and its packaging showed a wizards touch . As a feral bookseller aged 83 of the Q/cliff face where the earth meets the sea I am delighted to sell it for Pete s sake p s from Pete aka Pierre
