Great Item....
We had a gas like smell in our understairs cupboard, so contacted British Gas straight away. The engineer came out and checked all pipework and the meter, but found no gas escape and said all was ok. Over the next week, we were still sure we could smell gas, so i purchased this gas detector. To put it as honestly as i can, this has got to be the best £28 i have ever spent. Upon delivery (which was very quick thankfully) i set about checking the pipework in the cupboard. The unit itself is a large pen like object and very simple to use staight out of the packaging...even the batteries are included. It takes a few seconds to warm up or 'calibrate' and then beeps every two seconds or so along with a green light to indicate that all is ok. After checking slowly along the gas pipes for a minute or so the yellow light came on to indicate gas, then followed by a loud beeping and flashing red and yellow lights. This indicated a fairly strong gas leak to our gas meter regulator valve, which was later confirmed by another British Gas emergency engineer who we called back straight away. This little device definitely kept us safe and found a potentially dangerous gas leak that a far more expensive detector sadly missed the first time around. I shall never be without one of these in the future...every home should have one!

Excellent, and it really works!
I'd noticed an obnoxious smell coming from the kitchen, which appeared to be emanating from the area of my gas cooker. I turned the gas off at the meter, and the smell gradually went away. As I don't use the gas cooker very much, I could afford to leave the gas turned off until I could confirm whether it was coming from the piping or the cooker itself, and whether I needed to report the leak.I purchased this product based on the reviews it had been given, and it arrived two days after ordering. Turning the gas supply back on, I used the detector, and within a minute or two I was able to locate within inches the source of leaking - the knob mechanism which turns on one of the gas rings. It appeared the knob was sticking, and was not returning to its correct position, i.e., not springing back out at the off position. I removed the knob and a quick spray of WD40 around the mechanism cleared the jamming - problem solved!Though not a substitute for a unit constantly monitoring for gas leaks, I highly recommend it for regularly checking around known sources of gas usage and appliances, and it will detect any leaks and their location very quickly indeed…and being small, is very portable.

I don't have a gas leak
This is quite simple to use. Unscrew the end put batteries in screw back up like most torches. Switch on and it takes about 20 second to start up, after which a green lights flashes. Wave it about and it detects gas. I tested it against one of the burners on the hob and it gave a positive detection. It flashes a light and makes an obvious beep when this happens. We had a minor flood that resulted in a damp smell in the crawl space under our house. I was concerned that I also smelled gas. Getting a negative from this probe was reassuring and cost less than a call out from a gas engineer. It is more of an investigation tool rather than a continuous monitoring tool. There are other products on Amazon that are, perhaps, better suited to warn you when the hob's been accidentally left on.

Great product but trust your nose as well
Very easy to use and would recommend this without doubt, but from recent experience would say that if you reckon you can smell gas get the gasman in anyway! Our son thought he caught odd whiffs of gas (very intermittent) if he was sitting on his floor near the gas fire in his rented flat. We used the detector - initially it found nothing, then detected gas by a join in the pipework, then found nothing, then detected gas again. Got the gasman in and he used foam to find the leak - initially without success; then he tried again, the foam bubbled and he agreed there was a leak. Leak was obviously very slight but we found this detector very useful. Don't sweep it over the pipework too quickly to give it the best chance of finding a problem.

Handy tool,excellent quality and sensitive
Bought this after gas alterations in house and find it to be just right for the job. Have tested it and it picks up very small volumes of gas so gives confidence in its use. Would recommend this product.

Works well if close to the leak
Easy to use detector - pop in the supplied batteries and let it calibrate (about 30 seconds) and away you go.It's simple to use, you just point in the direction and it lights up if gas is detected. However - it needs to be pretty close to detect a leak. I tried on a gas stove and no issues, but I had a small leak and a gas engineer found it and the pen had to be really close to detect.Still useful to have - just in case

Do you smell gas?
A must have product on gas installations . It's a handy addition to the tool set which easily fit in the tool bag or glove box. You're having a problem with a pressure test but can't find which weld is the cause , this is your key. Unlike spray detection this won't go off.

Peace of Mind
I purchased the gas detector because I wasn't sure if I had a gas leak from my hob. I had only smelt gas once, so thought I might be imagining that there was a leak. For peace of mind, I purchased the detector and when it arrived I used it to check out the hob and gas pipes. It is very easy to use and it detected nothing, which is good. I keep it handy now in case I suspect a leak in the future. I'm sure the detector gave correct feedback, i.e. no gas leak, as I haven't smelt gas again. I've given it four stars but had it detected a leak, I would have given it five.
