There were a couple issues with the specific one I received -- but it does the job!
Let me start by saying that there are two reasons this item -- as I received it -- is earning a 4 rather than a 5. The first is that, considering the simplicity and materials of this hub, the price is on the high side for what it is in the first place: I don't think the price point really reflects the value of the item. That brings me to the second reason for the 4. Based on the issue of cost vs. product value, I decided to save just under $16 by purchasing a "Like New" hub from Amazon Warehouse -- that's not a big savings, but for an item that is actually in "Like New" condition, that felt like a better value. The description noted "No item damage observed during inspection. Minor packaging damage observed during inspection." Based on that description, I was expecting packaging damage (although I wasn't really expecting the accompanying product paperwork to be all ripped up). But the hub I received did have minor damage and other signs of light usage: it had a ding on the top and some usage discoloration (it made me wonder a bit what kind of light they're examining items in). The item I received is not what I'd consider "Like New" condition, and "Like New" condition is what I paid for, so the lack of full alignment between item condition description and the actual item was a disappointment and further impacted my sense of product value for price paid. The product -- as I personally received it -- is worth a 4 based on the value of what I've received vs. what I paid.Of course, I'd expect the latter issue won't be a problem for the majority of people purchasing "New," but based on my first two experiences (this is the second, and the first was a new item) purchasing accessories from Solo Stove via Amazon, I would recommend that purchasers immediately open and carefully inspect all items, so they have time to return just in case the item is not in a condition they find acceptable. In this case, although I should have been paying for "Very Good," not "Like New" condition, I've opted not to return this hub because the ding doesn't impact functionality or stability, and while I am not likely to have dinged this item, the minor discoloration would have happened, anyway (I just would have preferred to be the one to do it).Now that I've discussed those issues, I'll move on to the other details. This product is a lightweight metal hub that nestles in the top of the Solo Stove to hold the company's sold-separately cast iron cooktops and allow wood to be added as needed without removing the cooktop, so the correct temperature can be maintained. There is no additional mechanism that secures the hub to the firepit -- it just rests in the indented section of the top -- but in most cases where people are exercising adequate care, it should stay put.The elevation the hub adds to the Ranger firepit is appropriate for cooking while seated, and the hub has a top-center hole that aligns with the bottom of the Solo Stove cooktop to lessen the chance the cooktop will slip or get knocked off the Solo Stove. Of course, based on the weight of the cooktop compared to the weight of the hub and stove, I'd still recommend making sure the ground is as solid and even as possible, but the cooktop is not likely to move as long as it's not unbalanced.Although the hub is clearly designed to work with Solo Stove's cooktops, the design also works well for other cookware with the appropriate rounded bottom shape and size as long as it can stand up to high heat/flame (like other cast iron cookware). For example, I've tested a couple two-handled woks that were wider than the top of the hub with rounded sides and a flat bottom smaller than the hub's center hole, and those nestle quite well and don't seem inclined to shift. Straight-sided cookware doesn't nestle quite as well into the shape of the hub's top, but some angled-side and rounded-side cookware of the right dimensions can sit in the hub without adding a grate on the top, and that provides some additional cookware options. Since the deepest Solo Stove cooktop option -- the wok -- is still pretty shallow, I was pleased to discover that some of the other cookware I have nestles as securely into the hub as the cooktops do.The hub offers room for further improvement, of course -- as I've said, this is a bit overpriced for what it is; it would also be more appropriate if it came with a cover the way my Solo Stove did, and I can think of ways that some design tweaks would improve the way the hub pairs with the firepit (so there would be little to no opportunity for it to slide a bit on the top) -- but the fact that this hub is specifically designed to fit the Solo Stove Ranger I have and that I will be able to use this hub with more of my cookware means it does the core job I hoped it would do. And that makes it well worthy of my 4-star rating.
