ATTENTION SOLDIERS ON PARADE
Had this series on old VHS tapes and have finally got round to getting on DVD and have to say not disappointed, it's great to relive those magic moments with for me the two that made this show Robson Greene aka Dave Tucker and Jerome Flynn as Paddy Garvey and their long suffering other halves Nancy aka Holly Aird and Donna played by Rosie Rowell. All 7 series are included on 23 discs plus the cases they are in include episode titles on the back and inside a guide to what each story is about, this show is very rare as it was created by one of the greatest female writers Lucy Gannon and tells the trails and tribulations of the soldiers from the regiment The Kings Fusilers and shows what army life is like for not only the soldiers but the wives and girlfriends left behind when they go away for a certain period. We also get to see them abroad in Hong Kong, Germany, Australia and get to see them parade past Windsor Castle where the recent royal wedding took place. There are so many great actors who went to other well known shows and many guest actors as well, Robert Glenister, David Haig, Patterson Joesph, Chris Gascoyne, Denise Welch, Dougray Scott and Peter Wingfield who went into American TV and film. Before he made his name as Wesley Wyndham Price in Buffy and Angel a very young looking Alexis Denisoff played an american soldier in a couple of episodes so no wonder his English Accent was so good!A very young looking Shaun Dingwall appears as Lance Cpl Steve Evans now more famously known as Pete Tyler the father of Doctor Who Companion Rose Tyler. There are no special features but I can live past that and just enjoy this wonderful drama and writing that is very much missed in todays world of reality shows! This is a must have if you were a fan back in the day and to look back on the birth of the friendship between Robson and Jerome that gave us that magical moment of Unchained Melody onscreen that led to phonecalls for the single to be released and gave them the biggest number one of that year and started them making a couple of albums!

good solid drama
Instead of reviewing just series 1, then all the others individually, i will save time and write the one piece for the whole soldier soldier series 1 to 7.series 1 and 2 were just 7 episodes each but they were top notch tv, excellent drama with superb humour too. they developed the main characters well but added in others for short periods maintaining a great consistency but making each episode different.series 3 and 4, as the rest of soldier soldier was, were more episodes per series, usually 13 to 15. still great story lines, and the lead characters dominating but with other story lines developing from lesser characters, some also had gone from series 1 and 2, while new ones were introduced, the standard of 3 and 4 wasnt quite up to the early episodes of 1 and 2 but still made for great entertainment.series 5,6 and 7 were dissapointing in comparisen to the early series, so many characters disappeared without explanation from the earlier shows, too many new ones were introduced to quickly which left a gap of undeveloped characters, and new storylines that didnt match the earlier standard or where too far fetched. there was still some good moments in the last 3 series, but they just lacked the continuity of the earlier shows. i think soldier soldier finished up at the right moment, it had run its course, overall i give it 4 stars for the overall production, storylines, actors/actresses and entertainment, but as the standard dropped somewhat in the later series it dosent get a 5.

Great series
This is one of those series that is very well put together. Only down side for me is that some characters just disappear with no explanation. Other than that it is a great series with good story lines. Definitely 5 stars.

Still excellent a decade on...
It's hard to believe that the first series of Soldier Soldier was made in 1991! 17 years on and it's still excellent viewing, entertainment and of interesting military historical content.A series made in a world pre-9/11, still raises the same issues that face army personnel and their families today. Questions of pay, care for the families, and the threat of cuts and amalgamation of regiments. From a historical point it's fascinating to be taken back to a time when Northern Ireland was more poignant to the army, the Falklands only ten years past, and the troubles in the first Gulf war and Bosnia were very prominent. Stories based on a background of these events along with the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese, make this series so much more than just a drama. The show itself still has that charm that fans remember from the first time it was broadcast. The wonderful interaction of the main three actors, Flynn, Green and Love can again be enjoyed in this great box set. With witty scripts and a plethora of interesting characters....from the stereotypical posh officers, to the rough and ready fusilier. The interaction between all the "wives" is great to watch too, and how they all ultimately pull together, regardless of their background or social standing. It has been a pure joy to watch all these episodes again, and I highly recommend this set.One note of caution, there does not appear to be any difference between this set priced around £40-45, than the set that is priced ridicuously over £100. Be sure to shop around for the cheaper price.
