The decryption provides the measurement of the recess for mounting. The spacing is such that the mount will be centered in the recess. The mounting screw holes are 4 inches apart. Hope this helps.

my armrests did not come with screws - what size are the screws?

No idea, but could you use the screws for your original arm rests? Mine came with the screws.

These are contoured so it is hard to answer your question. At the thickest point (the outside edge) they are approximately 1.5" thick. The top is concaved to accept the shape of your arm. They are firm but not hard. They are virtually identical to the original parts on my chair.

is this a universal size?

I don't know that it will fit every office chair, so I wouldn't say it's universal, but it's designed to fit the most common arm rests for office chairs.
