The New High Protein Diet: Lose weight quickly, easily and permanently

Excellent book but the diet has downsides too
Are we reviewing the diet or the book? The book is excellent, does the science bit very quickly and clearly - and uses it to convince you the diet will work. The tone of it is really enthusing and gets you interested and convinced about having a go. Some good recipes too (even with the lack of pictures), prob worth it just for those! The main problem we had was that the diet gave us such awful constipation we had to give up after about a week! Dr Clark says if you drink the amount of water he recommends you won't get constipation, and you would think the quantities of veg might help...but in our case not. However we lost a few pounds even after starting to eat carbs again, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is the importance of a decent breakfast. It would never have crossed my mind to eat fish for breakfast (poached haddock and gruyere or an egg on top for example) but now it is a fairly regular occurence in our house. Also you do not have all that obsessive low-fat crap that so many diets insist on which makes the whole thing a lot more palatable - butter etc is allowed.I dont think the book really deals with the downsides of the diet, as well as what I have already mentioned, it makes you feel pretty spaced out and wierd to start off with, plus can give you terrific cravings for carbs - which do stop but it wouldnt help to be prepared (look on the internet like we did). Also it is a lot of work changing your diet with the thinking, meal planning, shopping and extra prep compared to usual (probably, for most people, tho I do speak for myself) if you follow his recipes. I suppose Dr Clark just doesnt want to put people off by saying anything about the downsides, also he runs a private diet clinic and has his reputation to think of I suppose! For us this book has been a useful step on the ladder to the longer game of trying to work out a long term, sustainable way of eating healthily without feeling deprived or hungry. If you are trying to work out your own system, try Kate Adams Flat Tummy Club. I have also just ordered 'Escape the Diet Trap' by Dr John Briffa, which I understand also has good things to say about a high protein approach but I think is a bit more about general principles than giving you a strict formula to lose weight like Dr Clark's book.

The Jury's still out for me....
l was so excited to receive this book, l've been following a low protein regime for a week (mainly using protein shakes, etc) and it's been so easy and l've lost over 5lbs. However, on reading the "dos and don'ts" l'm quite disappointed. l've not eaten meat for nearly 30 years, and to be honest l'm struggling as to what's actually left for me besides a bit of fish now and again. l eat a lot of Quorn and pulses, so basically l think l'm snookered on this one. lf l knew for definite l could carry on with Quorn, l'm confident l could do this, but there's nothing in the book that covers that. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions, please? l'm perfectly happy to carry on as l am, and the carb tables for fruit etc from the book will be hugely useful to me. l agree 100% that this is the way forward, l haven't had chocolate for a week (unheard of for me!) and haven't felt hungry at all. No cravings either. Brilliantly simple idea, and the weight comes off very easily!

Approach with caution
Very good diet that actually works. Headaches from lack of carbs within first two weeks (for a couple of days), but this soon subsides if you don't give in. It became very easy to follow, indirectly encourages you to cut down on portions (which i did and still do). Also changes your way of eating for life, even if you don't stay on the diet forever. Lost a lot of weight and don't think i will ever be back to original weight.However.....I would not recommend for this to be done over a long period of time. I now have small gall stones which I am sure were caused by eating a lot of protein, mainly meats. But read other reviews as I'm not sure if I had these before, i'm only 24 so you're guess is as good of mine. Also it's quite difficult to get protein foods on the go. A lot of preparation is required beforehand. Be prepared to buy a block of cheddar cheese at the corner shop when emergency hunger strikes and you're not at home. Finally, I have realised the BEST way to lose weight AND look trim is through exercise. Sure you will lose weight if you follow this, but wouldn't you just be a smaller version of yourself? You will still have some body fat, less, but still there. Unless you were extremely large to begin with, no one would notice your weight loss too much, AND you will not look lean. Sorry guys, exercise is the best way, there is no escaping it, but this diet can definitely help. Get an exercise DVD or go to some classes and PUSH yourself, you can do it!

A diet with a difference
I was a bit sceptical when I bought this book but having spent a lifetime following low fat, low calorie diets, I wanted to look into something different. The way the author explains the science behind why carbs affect your eating habits is really quite facinating. I haven't read any other low carb/high protein diets but speaking to colleagues, this one seems to be a bit more flexible allowing a carb allowance each day. Followed this plan so far for three weeks and so far so good. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to completely change their eating habits and the way they look at food.Update - now been following this lifestyle for 6 months and still feeling the benefits. Almost 50 pounds lighter, losing an average of 2 - 3 lbs a week. A few friends are also following this plan too after seeing these results and they are also seeing massive benefits. The key thing to do this successfully is to be organised - there are some great high protein low carb recipes out there so it doesn't need to be a boring plan. I really look forward to my meals and hope to keep this going. Not sure what happens when you want to just maintain the weight you are so if anyone has any ideas?

Same as other protein diets
. Order arrived the next day. Book is 90% recipes and most of the content is repeated. I didn't learn anything new. Not too different from Atkins diet

The author is English and the ingredients aren't easily found here
The author is English and the ingredients aren't easily found here. Plus I didn't like some of his breakfasts. Not for me, but worked wonders for my daughter who lives in England.

Nothing special
This book has really basic information. I'm pretty sure I could have found this stuff online. I wouldn't recommend it
