Lean Thinking was launched in the fall of 1996, just in time for the recession of 1997. It told the story of how American, European, and Japanese firms applied a simple set of principles called 'lean thinking' to survive the recession of 1991 and grow steadily in sales and profits through 1996. Even though the recession of 1997 never happened, companies were starving for information on how to make themselves leaner and more efficient. Now we are dealing with the recession of 2001 and the financial meltdown of 2002. So what happened to the exemplar firms profiled in Lean Thinking? In the new fully revised edition of this bestselling book those pioneering lean thinkers are brought up to date. Authors James Womack and Daniel Jones offer new guidelines for lean thinking firms and bring their groundbreaking practices to a brand new generation of companies that are looking to stay one step ahead of the competition. Review: Great Read - is worth reading if imterested in service/quality improvement - Great Introduction in to Lean Thinking. Is excellent read to get you understand what the topic is, and will give you a flavor as to whether you want to continue in the topic. If starting your quality improvement journey, it is an excellent value read. However, Lean Thinking is just one tool, please check out other options too. Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation Review: One of the major books on lean thinking and lean management - Ok so its been around for a while but the principles remain the same even thought the applications may have changed After an introduction about the merits of lean over older models of production and manufacturing improvement, the book divides into chapters focusing on case studies or various large companies who have successfully put lean methods into practice This book is as much of an academic work as a book for the general public It is well written and interesting Many key developments leading up to lean thinking are covered Many key lean principles are covered and enlarged upon This book is well worth reading for anyone with an interest in lean thinking or manufacturing

Great book
One of the reviews on the back of the book says 'An inspiring, readable and thoroughly practical guide .... read this before you hire consultants' - Sir John Egan, former President, CBI. I cannot really add to that except to say I learnt much from this great book and happily recommend it.

Follow Ohno With This
I read this right after Taiichi Ohno's "Toyota Production System" and it contributed hugely to my understanding of the subject. It also brings things up to date with more case studies (and a follow up on those case studies if you get the anniversary edition). Very well written.

Good but expected more
After reading the machine that changed the world my expectations were very high. This is not quite that but it is a good book.

A classic, must read
I was fortunate enough to participate in the Pratt & Whitney lean transformation described in Lean Thinking. While it is not a "how to" book, it does a good job of describing the lean initiatives undertaken. This book is a classic "lean must read."
