A beautifully compiled Art book with sharp and colourful illustrations, written by a very informative and entertaining author. This book would be a great starting point for anyone interested in the world of art and includes examples of many different artistic styles. Others have already adequately stated the books shortcomings so I will not repeat these.

This renowned volume is a compelling and fascinating tour through history (and pre-history) of how Art got to be Art. It has sold 8 million copies and in its 16th edition so that tells you just how good it is! But my review is really about choosing (see above photo for size difference) between the glossy, big format edition and the 2001 pocket format. I bought the pocket edition first. I loved it so much that I thought I would treat myself to this full size version. I’m glad I did. The full size version is for the coffee table or sitting up and reading at a desk. It’s a beautiful book with every art work mentioned shown in very high quality photographs alined with the relevant text. Ie in contrast to the pocket edition, there’s no need to flip pages to a separate part of the book to get to the matching illustration. ✅✅ worth the extra cost. But it’s not a book that I could read in bed as the glossy paper and size means that it’s a rather heavy handful. So I’m very glad I also have both editions. However if I had to get only 1 then I would choose the pocket version. All the text and all the colour illustrations and cleverly managed with much less weight.

This is the most accessible and methodical book on art I've ever read. It's a comprehensive introduction to art in general - from very early times with cave paintings and Greek sculpture right up until the early 20th Century. It's tremendously easy reading, and the tone is very accessible without being simplistic. You'll get a solid overview of art and artistic movements right up until modern times, and understand far, far more about art than you did when you started reading it. Whilst it won't necessary change your tastes, you'll certainly understand where the artistic movements such as impressionism and expressionism came from and what they try to convey. The book is arranged into logical chapters, which can't have been that easy a task; things don't always fall into discrete categories. There are plenty of pictures and illustrations, and it's rare to find a work of art mentioned in the text and not illustrated on a page close by, which really helps you to picture and understand things. Whilst Gombrich doesn't go in-depth on many paintings, you have enough to give you a grounding and stir your enthusiasm to read more on the topics. The end of the book is slightly confusing - it wraps up towards the end, but then there are additions and revisions to the text. The authors tackles the tricky topic of some of the more modern artists to emerge, but without really wanting to. There's also a fairly confusing chapter in the most recent edition of the book about 'rewriting the past' which deals with the changing face of art as historians and archaeologists find more - whilst this is a worthy topic, it's terribly confusing to come at the end of the book. That said, this should not detract from the rest of read, and I really wish I'd read this book in my teens - it's a fantastic education in itself on art. If you consider yourself ignorant about art and want to know more - but possibly find it all slightly intimidating, then read this book!

Excellent book, wonderful images, interesting text. Needed this for my college course and uses it for quotes in essays. Great!

As a person of keen interest in art and especially of visiting European art galleries, this book is exactly what I needed.

A very comprehensive look at art. The author though does not stick to paintings only, but includes sculptures and architecture as well. You see all three progressing through the centuries. The book has good colour pictures throughout. Highly recommended.

This is an immensely readable book, packed with interesting observations about art from prehistory to the second half of the 20th century. It is a great introduction to the history of art and helps give an overview of the subject, though for detail on artists and art movements you need to look elsewhere. The illustrations are high quality and generally arranged on the page to which they refer. There are also some glorious colour fold outs of iconic artworks. If I have one criticism, it is that Gombrich totally ignores female artists. When talking about Jackson Pollock, for example, he discusses possible sources for his inspiration for drip paintings whilst not once mentioning Lee Krasner (wife of Pollock who was producing drip paintings before they even met). Over all, though, a good read.

本書は英語で読める西洋美術の通史としては、もっとも人気があり、かつ、もっとも評価の高いものだろう。本書の著者E. H. Lovely book, a delight to read.I am doing an art course online and this was a recommended reading. I have enjoyed reading it so far. The book arrived after almost a month but it was in a great condition
