framing square
this is the 1st choice and only choice for me, its heavier than the alloy ones around but that has its plusses too, just a great metric square with a clear coating for longer protection from rust, keep it dry and itll be good for life, stanley were helpfull too when i requested some original instructions via email. all you need once you have your square is some starrett #111 finger type stair gauges to acompany!

Quality Steel Square
I wanted a square that can stand up to brick work. This has a lovely 'industrial' feel to it. It's well made, nicely weighted and, most importantly, accurate. Measurements are metric only, and are clearly inscribed on both sides. Very happy with this product and would be happy to recommend it.

Label is very hard to remove
Great square but took ages to get the label off which covered important numbers!

Sturdy
Strong square that is accurate and coated in a protective layer so should last a while in the workshop.

Very sturdy but poorly finished (where it matters)
I work with fabric (heavy duty nylon), leather and vinyl, designing and making bespoke protective covers for audio, AV and computing equipment, and 'almost' everything I cut is square. A lot of the materials are cut with a rotary cutter, and so rulers cannot be plastic. To kill two birds with one stone (a large square and ruler in one) I thought I'd pick up a framing square. As this is a professional tool which will effectively pay for itself, I didn't want to cut corners and go for the cheaper framing squares on Amazon, but also didn't feel paying too much was necessary... If it's sturdy, 'actually' square and accurate, it's good enough. I've had plenty of Stanley products over the years and as a recognised and trusted brand name, at the price I was happy to pay, this was the goldilocks option. First, the positives... It's very solid and substantial. Thick, heavy steel with a nicely finished top surface. The surface is a brushed effect, with the numbers and markings stamped into the metal (not painted). I have checked it with several technical drawing squares and it seems perfectly square (but I don't know what the QC is like on these so don't take my word for it!). It will clearly last a lifetime from a ruggedness standpoint. You're not bending this unless you run over it with a truck. And not the negatives... As I will be using this for drawing lines/angles and cutting with a rotary cutter, the finishing of the edges is a problem. The 'outer edge' is fine, but the inner edges are is a mixture of sharp and rough areas, and also bubbling in the protective lacquer causing bumps. This thing will SHRED any pencil or felt tip pen you use and it will ruin any ballpoint pen. I haven't used a rotary cutter or blade with this yet but I think it's going to be a problem on the inner edges. I have measured it against several rulers and it does appear to run ever so slightly long; approx 0.5mm by the end of the measure on the long side. The square has just arrived, 30 minutes before writing this review and I am undecided whether to keep it or not. I cannot use it without taking a piece of wet and dry to the bubbled lacquer and sharp edges. Do I need that kind of hassle? I don't know... I appreciate that maybe I am using this item for a purpose it was not necessarily made for e.g. measuring and cutting materials, but regardless, I expect ANY such tool to have a smooth edge for the sake of not destroying your marking/cutting implement and/or cutting your hand if you slide it along the edge. I fail to see how a cheaper square could have a worse finished edge, so I have probably wasted the premium I have paid for the more 'solid' build, for the purpose I'm using it for. I have therefore ordered a cheaper Draper square (less than half the price), and we'll see what that is like before deciding whether to return this or not. If it's better I will be back to edit and amend this review to be a far worse rating! If the cheaper one has equally poor edges, I'll just bite the bullet and buy a premium framing square. As I said above, I can't comment on the QC on these, so maybe mine was just a bit of a lemon. If you get a good one, it's a tool which will last you a lifetime. Maybe roll the dice and hope for the best!
