Hongdian 100 Silver Steel Piston Fountain Pen, Iridium Fine Nib Calligraphy, Smooth Writing Pens, Nice Writing Pen for Men & Women

So, I need to preface this review by saying that I have over four dozen fountain pens now. Writing with them is my happy place. However, when the first pen arrived, I could not get it to fill. I have several TWSBI piston fills, but this one confounded me. I was able to get just a few drops of ink in it to try out the nib, and that was it. Writing with the nib was as smooth as butter sliding over a hot skillet, and it laid down a smooth, heavy, wet line. I knew instantly that I had to have one that worked for my collection. So I packed it up, and back it went. The replacement has just arrived today. The new one glides over paper just as well. More importantly, however, the piston on it opened all the way up without any effort, and I understood that the original had a defect in the piston. This one was super-easy to fill, and held a lot of ink. I touched it to the page, and it just glided almost on its own. But let's get down to the things you want to know. 1) Smooth, wet, juicy writer that lays down a thick line with no effort whatsoever. 2) It does not skip at all when you flip it over to write from the top. It lays down a super-thin, clean line without really having any feedback even in this position. 3) Holding the nib at a 45 degree angle from its point really doesn't make much of a difference when trying to get a little calligraphy style in your cursive writing. But, honestly, there's not a lot of feedback there. It's an all around smooth writing experience no matter which way I've turned it (apart from the obvious angles that lay down no ink at all). 4) The pen posts. It posts very easily, and fits with the barrel over halfway up the cap. Read it's not just fitting at the tip. 5) When the cap is posted, the pen is nearly twice as heavy, if not more, than it is unposted. This pen already has a little heft to it, which is a statement all on its own. With the cap on, however, it is very TOP-HEAVY. I don't care, but it may make a difference to you, as it affects the way you write with it. 5) It's in my daily lineup now. I need to work out my wrist and forearm a little just to be able to use it as much as I write daily. However, Writing with it is pure joy... so, worth it. 10/10 recommend. Unless you don't like heavy pens. Also, this pen is very textured. If you're sensitive to textures, be aware that the texture is rough, but not sharp around the barrel, but smooth in the grip area. Depending on how you hold your pen, you may feel the texture but rub against the crease between your thumb and forefinger.

I collect and use fountain pens of all types. I saw this pen and bought it due to its very affordable price point. I didn’t except much when I received the pen. I have bought Chinese pens in the past and was generally disappointed especially when it came to writing. Firstly, the pen is large and very ornate but looks good. It feels good in the hand too, not too heavy at all. I don’t know what the pen is made of other than metal but it is light and is not magnetic. I ordered an extra fine point. The nib writes well, is not scratchy, with some feedback, and is wet for a fine point. I was very pleased with the writing in general. You can write with the cap posted or not, either way it is balanced. It is a piston filled pen. There were no instructions with the pen but it did have a wrench to take the piston apart for cleaning—very nice touch. The only negative I could find is the clip—a little too stiff for my liking. Overall, at this price point, the pen is a must have for fountain pen enthusiasts. I would recommend this pen.

This is such a beautiful pen. The etching on it is breath taking. I hope I did not use the incorrect word. The pen has a little weight to it. The fine nib writes smoothly. Similar to writing with your favorite pencil. I say that because the ink I used was wearingeul, I am a cat. Such a great pairing of the two items. Although, any ink written with this pen is going to be a joy to write with. Highly recommended. Just looking at the pen is fascinating.

This is a very impressive pen for the price. The metal body has real heft to it and feels substantial rather than cheap, and I really like the overall design and appearance. The Fine nib on mine is smooth and reliable, but it is considerably wetter and broader than I expected from something labeled Fine. My handwriting is fairly small and compact, and the extra ink tends to close up some of my letters unless I deliberately write larger. In side-by-side testing, finer Japanese nibs work better for my handwriting. That isn't really a criticism of the pen so much as something to know before buying. If you like a generous, smooth, wet writer, the Hongdian 100 is excellent. If you write very small like I do, you may wish for a finer option. The build quality and writing experience are remarkable for what these cost.

Buy several hoping one will work or pass. Bought this pen after seeing a couple of reviews saying it was a decent pen for what it is and the price is nothing compared to pens with comparable mechanisms, and I wanted to try a long knife nib. So I pulled the trigger. The pen is mainly brass making it heavier than I like. The piston will not fill. Most disappointing of all is the nib. It is supposed to write like an architect nib. Absolutely zero line variation. It’s smooth enough but it’s just a stiff steel medium. So this is a highly over priced Chinese import that doesn’t work on any front and is extremely heavy. Spend the extra $10 and buy an eco with a broad. You’ll save the hassle of having to return it.

Update 07/05/23: The pen broke. During my 5th refill, I noticed the dial at the top of the pen went slack. Upon inspection, it seems the plastic screw within the pen shattered. I did not turn it aggressive while refilling, and used normal pressure. Just goes to show you get what you pay for. So while the appearance is great, it's not a pen built to last. Update: I've gotten used to the weight and I am here to say it's become my favorite pen. I like it even more than my Sailors, and it's smoother then their gold nibs too. I recently bought a new Sailor and this was like a "why not purchase" at the same time. This $32 pen outshines that $100 pen. Wow, amazing, amazing pen with an incredible nib for 32.44. It writes super smooth, and the extra fine nib on this is finer than Lamys. It makes no noise when writing, whereas my Lamys are all a bit scratchy at the Extra Fine level. My only complaint is that it's thick and heavy and makes my wrist hurt after only a page of writing. I do have small hands, so this might be a perfect 10/10 for someone who isn't petite.

This is a beautiful pen! I really enjoy the writing experience—it doesn’t skip and creates a slight two-tone effect with some inks, which adds character to my writing. However, I’ve noticed some ink bleeding depending on the brand, even when I use fountain pen-friendly paper. The pen’s ink capacity was initially a concern for me, as I thought it would hold more ink. That said, I’ve been writing quite a lot and haven’t noticed any signs of it running low yet. This might just be an impression, as the pen design doesn’t allow me to fully see the ink levels. One small detail: the clip is slightly off-center, which I noticed because I pay attention to the tiniest things. Overall, though, this is a minor flaw. I’m genuinely happy with this pen! It’s a great choice for both its aesthetics and functionality.

The pen came fast, but I was impatient, I couldn’t wait. I opened the box and inked it up. Sailor Shikiori Irori red. I made a swatch and began to write. It’s comfortable and fun to write with. Life got in the way of my writing sessions and I wasn’t able to write for a bit, sad. The moment I picked up the pen, it wrote. Not only is this pen fun to write with it looks great while I’m doing it. There are so many detailed engravings I don’t think I can identity them all. It is very well made. The cap unscrews and screw back on in a little over 1 revelation. Post the pen has some heft, I wrote posted and unposted depending on my mood. Not many things in the $20 range give me joy, certainly not sustained joy, but this pen is doing just that. Stop making hobbies and fountain pens about who can flex most about this or that. I liked the pen. I bought the pen. I inked the pen. And, not only am I gonna keep the pen, but I brag about it. I may buy another or 2. Love it.

E' arrivata puntuale in una buona confezione. la stilografica è molto bella e armoniosa di colore grigio, mi piaceva anche quella verde ma un po troppo carica specialmente sul tappo, mentre trovo la grigio molto più elegante, scrivere fine non mi piace molto preferisco un pennino medio , le ho cambiato il pennino con molta facilità ora la scrittura è fluida e corrente, ha una costruzione robusta, il caricamento dell'inchostro sembra fragile ma non lo è, si carica bene, certo che trattandosi di una stilografica va trattata con delicatezza. Che dire pienamente soddisfatto la sto usando anche in questo momento, ora la userò per alcuni mesi per continuare a provarla e se si mantiene cosi, forse acquisterò anche la verde. La penna è ottima, ed il tratto (pennino long blade) è decisamente particolare. Unica pecca è la chiusura a vite, non ha un vero fine corsa ma diventa progressivamente più dura ed è tutto in plastica: hai la paura che ad avvitare troppo stretto prima o poi si spani, o peggio, si crepi il tappo. Il problema è stato risolto nella N8, ma non ha più la carica a stantuffo con sezione trasparente per controllare il livello, bensì il più comune converter Peccato, perché è una penna molto elegante

Scrive benissimo pennino spettacolare come e meglio di penne ben più care. Consigliata anche se l'aspetto non mi aveva entusiasmato.

Most beautiful fountain pen. It took a couple of attempts, to fill it with ink for the first time. But it is now ready to go. The writing is a lovely fine line. The pen has got a good weight to hold it in balance. Wonderful.
