can I plant these in containers as I do not have a very big garden

Yes you can.! I've got some in old plastic storage containers and a bucket. I thought it was going to die over the winter but now we are getting a bit more light it's coming back brilliantly. Soak the seed for a good hour before sowing and more of it will germinate.
