If you like painting then invest in these. The colour intensity is superb. So much better than Cotman series. Worth the investment - although I bought them cheaper from resale (box slightly squashed) Invest in decent watercolour brushes too.

The paints themselves are genuine W&N professional quality watercolours and are beautifully pigmented and a joy to work with. There is a noticeable step up in quality between them and the W&N Cotman set. The only thing letting this set down is the very flimsy, cheap, poor quality tin (I swear it’s the same tin the Cass art watercolours come in and they are a fraction of the price.) In an age where there are so many great watercolour products, I would like to see W&N put as much thought in to the paint case as they do their paints to keep their professional quality products feeling more, well, professional.

Brilliant qualities of colours, plenty of colour and easier for me to use than tubes

For years whilst I was doing my watercolur art course I used Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours (because the tutor advised us all to do so to save money) Well this was a big mistake for I was not happy with any of my washes and definitely not happy with end results of actual paintings. When I saw this Winsor & Newton professional watercolour set for only forty something pounds I snapped it up and I am so happy I did for I saw the difference immediately to student paints. These professional colours are luscious vibrant with fantastic luminosity and the difference in laying down a wash is heaven. When I make mistakes these paints easily wash out without ruining the painting. Days after laying the paint if I see an area where I want to add to it the paint stays clean and moves with a bit of water so I can add what ever I like. My paintings now look professional, I am proud to show them. I instantly fell in love with this paint box it transformed my art and I gained confidence. I will never use any other. I am saving a lot more money not wasting paint trying to achieve a standard and style of artwork which was just not possible with student paints. I have even moved on to using tubes of the professional Winsor & Newton watercolours and use the pan box for plein air, just put it in my art bag and off I go sketching and watercolouring whilst out and about. Something I never dared do using student paints.

Initially I wasn’t sure if I made the right choice purchasing the professional set, as I had already bought the Cotman set. I was also alarmed that I may have been scammed after reading a negative review saying that these were actually Cotman paints in fake packaging. However, today I did a swatch of every colour from this professional set next to the equivalent Cotman colour on Arches cold pressured 100% cotton paper, and the difference is obvious. I am very happy and relieved to see these professional colours are genuine. I’ve attached my swatch for reference. I highly recommend!

Der Aquarellkasten ist gut verpackt und zum versprochenen Zeitpunkt angeliefert worden. Die Ware war wie beschrieben, die Farben sind kräftig und gut zu vermalen. Die einzelnen Töpfchen waren separat verpackt, aber das ist normal und schützt die Farben beim Transport. Auf der Rückseite der Verpackung sind die einzelnen Farben nochmals beschrieben, was hilfreich für eine etwaige Nachbestellung ist.

Saw the older reviews about this being a scam and the pans being replaced with cotman, tin broken etc, but decided to take a gamble and purchase anyways. I had absolutely no problems! Arrived fast and the tin is in great condition, the watercolors were all professional grade and nothing is broken.

This is a set of 24 half pans of W/N professional (NOT Cotman) watercolors in a black tin, sometimes marketed as a travel set. The pigments are just about as good as they get-transparent, rich and easily activated. Few tins include ideal color selections beyond the basic warm and cool hues. This one is close to ideal and includes 7 neutrals, including both yellow ochre and raw Sienna, a sepia, and ivory. Highlights are Permanent Rose, Permanent Magenta, Winsor violet, Indanthrene blue and Hookers green. This set includes both traditional and contemporary colors such as phtalo blue and phtalo green. I added a few other pans of convenience colors in between the packaged rows. During the 18 months since I first bought this kit, I have tried many other brands of professional watercolors in both tubes and pans. I keep coming back to this palette because it is a great combination of mixing colors and convenience favorites, and the quality is really outstanding. The price is less than professional pan sets by other companies that I found to be less satisfactory than these, in terms of both performance and color range. Also-there is nothing wrong with the tin. When you buy any brand of these sets, one has to arrange and secure the half-pans by pinching together the sides of the metal brackets to hold them securely in place. I ordered a second set on Feb 8, 2023 and the order was cancelled by the seller after more than a month. Seller did not respond to inquiries sent through Amazon messages, but Amazon re-ordered for me. It was worth the wait-I'm very pleased with these paints and recommend them highly. Edit 8/2/2025: Saw this set at a local discount art supply store yesterday for $195

Winsor Newton professional watercolor is one of the best brands out there and it’s definitely worth getting! I usually go for their tubes but needed to have a larger set like this one!
