Sony ICF-S80 Splash Proof Shower Radio with...
After deciding to replace my old bathroom radio due to the tuning knob breaking off, I thought I would try out a DAB radio. I purchased a FM/DAB radio, similar to my old AM/FM set, this new one had integral rechargeable battery via a usb socket. All seemed good with the DAB until it stopped/turned off while I was having a bath of about 25 mins or so, the battery was flat. After charging the radio back up, I used it again, only to find it lasted not much longer than the previous time. I went on to charge it again but the mini usb socket was starting to wobble and not charge properly, I sent it back and got a refund. I looked into these, and other DAB radios and it would seem that they are very power hungry and last only a couple of hours if you are lucky, on normal batteries. So, I have now gone back to an am/fm set, purchased this Fab Sony FM/AM radio, usual very good Sony quality, nice sound and volume, easy to use, and looks like the batteries will easily last a year or two. The radio tunes into stations very well and I have found that I do not need to pull out the FM wire to get a good reception, all in all a very good radio for the bathroom, definitely a one to recommend.

Your Search is Over~This Water Friendly radio will Meet Your Needs! :)
I'm very happy with this Radio. I take long showers, and have had a tendency to 'kill' many an audio device, in an attempt to enjoy the company that having a radio in the bathroom affords. Based on the reviews and testimony of other users of this radio, I am confident that this one will serve me well. So far, I am very impressed. It's simple to set, simple to use, seems robustly built, and I can even read the time in the shower (w/o my glasses on) because the digital display is large enough. ☺ What's not to like? *I have only 1 proviso to offer. I live in Canada, and purchased the radio through Amazon.co.uk because, even after the shipping costs & custom/duties applied to purchasing it this way, is was 1/2 the cost it would have been to buy it from Amazon.ca, so I can't speak to whether or not my 1 slight difficulty with setting the radio has to do with radio settings specific to the UK or not. I have been unable to tune in to one of my favourite AM stations exactly. I can listen to it, but the tuner won't stay precisely on the station's ID no matter what I try, and as such, it's a bit gravelly.* This said, I am so grateful just to find a GOOD radio for the bathroom, and one that includes AM stations at all! I have no qualms in recommending this radio to anyone looking for a good, durable, water 'friendly' radio.

Fabulous UK bathroom radio. Buy it. We bought two we were so impressed!
this is a great radio. It's stylish and compact so looks very tidy. It is easy to set 5 FM and also 5 AM channels which is great as my daughter and I like the pop music on FM while hubby presses a button to switch to his AM channels (usually Talk Sport) so everyone is happy. It's dead easy to use, the volume goes quite loud if you like it loud, and the battery is lasting well after more than a month of daily use during morning showers. I like the time display too. I would have preferred a black handle but as it can be moved to sit underneath the radio it is very discreet as radio is sat on a work surface in the bathroom rather than hanging from the shower as I want it to last and it appeared lots of direct splashing could reduce its shelf life so I didn't want to risk water damage, although the description indicates it would withstand this. Would strongly recommend this radio as it might be more expensive than other radios but you definitely get what you pay for. This is the second one I've bought so we have one in both bathrooms. Very impressive waterproof radio that runs on a single battery that lasts for ages.

Worthy replacement to the S79W
In common with another review here, I bought this to replace my Sony ICF-S79W. The ICF-S80W has many qualities of the 79W: well-made (perhaps improved) appearance, simple to use, excellent battery life and, given it's size and price point good, clear sound (though lacking the bass sound of the 79W). AM reception appears weaker than the 79W The real test will be whether Sony have fixed the issue on the 79W of the control surfaces cracking up under exposure to wet hands and cleaning substances. That said, it's good to see Sony still catering for a market that simply requires a no-nonsense, easy to use, reasonable sounding analogue AM/FM splash-proof radio with excellent battery life.

Quality radio for the shower
This Sony showerproof radio is excellent. It is easy to set up, just took minutes to tune and set stations, and is very easy to use. The sound quality is great. I can't say how long batteries will last as I have only recently acquired it but other reviews mention that they last a long time. The radio is quite large and sturdy, and rather heavy once batteries are in place. I put mine on the ledge inside the shower, but it has a handle to loop over the shower fitting, or over a hook, and this seems strong . I had a cheaper radio before this one, but the quality of this is so much better, well worth the extra cost. A great purchase.

What a treat!
Having got tired of missing the best bits of the Today programme when in the shower or straining to hear the words above the sound of the water I bought one of these. What a lovely little radio it is. Sony quality, as you would expect, and so useful to have both presets and a auto timer off function (so you could take it through the bedroom and set it to fall asleep to if you wanted). There is also a countdown timer, but I haven't quite worked out what to do with that yet (it is a kitchen timer, really). Clear sound and very solidly made. Pure indulgence to be able to be listen to the radio in the shower, of course, what a luxury and a treat. Very happy with it, wish I had bought one years ago (and now I can listen to all the Today interviews if I want).

Upgrade from ICF-S79W
This radio replaces my Sony ICF-S79W, and my initial opinion was that it was inferior. However, after a few minutes I realised it was an upgrade. I initially thought this was inferior because of both its appearance and sound. Whereas the ICF-S79W was larger and had a gently curving front, this has all the appeal of a large white Lego brick. It looks as if little thought has gone into its design and therefore looks cheaper. The sound does not quite have the mellow tones of the ICF-S79W. However, I soon realised I had misunderstood the reasons for the changes Sony has made. It is smaller and therefore slightly more convenient. The handle is very flexible and easy to remove if you don't like or need it ... and to reattach it if, like me, you change your mind. It is long enough to hang around any shower head. The handle is stored around the base of the radio and because the stubby 'rubberised' 'legs' are thicker than the handle, the handle does not make it unstable. The ICF-S79W had no handle. I find the colour and texture of the handle and knobs appealing. The ICF-S79W was all white. The volume knob has a slightly rubbery texture so that even with wet hands it is easy to turn with one hand. The knob on the ICF-S79W was so slippery I had to use two hands to adjust the volume (one on either side of the unit). The volume knob has a raised indicator to indicate the volume level and to assist with turning the knob. The ICF-S79W had no indicator, so you could not tell by look or feel whether it was set at (for example) maximum volume. Because the tone of the ICF-S80 is not quite as mellow as the ICF-S79W it is easier to hear over the noise of the shower (ours is mains-fed and therefore very noisy). It is also still a pleasant sound to listen to elsewhere in the house should you wish to. It is slightly easier to operate than the ICF-S79W because there is only one button to turn it on and off. I would sometimes try to press the 'on' button on the ICF-S79W to turn it off. This time I will observe the instructions not to point the shower directly at the radio. I suspect that my efforts to get the soap off my old ICF-S79W (by holding a powerful shower six inches from the grill) were the cause of its sudden demise. I am no longer upset at the death of my old radio as it gave me the excuse I didn't know I needed to buy a better model.

Lovely little radio
I've got two of these radios now. The first one I bought for my bathroom and I've had it for almost two years. Its done a great job and still going strong. Easy to use and great reception. So much so that when my more expensive DAB radio (which was of a similar age) gave up the ghost recently I decided to replace it with one of these. The sound quality is good (fine for me) and its nice and lightweight so I can carry it around wherever I want it. Perfect.

High quality bathroom AM and FM radio
I am sorry I do not speak German. Do not go for cheap shower radios that you find around. That is money wasted. Spend some more money in high quality radio that last and give you good sound. This radio is the follow up of the very famous Sony ICF-S79, which nowadays can only be found in its US version (the EU version being sold out for a long time already). Instead, the Sony ICF-S80 that is sold here is the EU version, so the AM has 9 MHz steps and not 10 MHz steps as the US radios. Bear in mind that, contrary to other high quality radios, you cannot change the steps from 9 to 10 and viceversa in the Sony ICF-S79 and the Sony ICF-S80. It is either US version or EU version. The radio, as the ICF-S79, is not a shower radio, but a bathroom, radio. The radio is splash proof, IPX4, not waterproof. It cannot cope with direct jets of water. If you put it under the shower, it will die in around one year. If you put it out of the shower's jet in any other place in the bathroom (including over the shower tap) it will last forever. You do not have to worry that it gets some water drops here and there when you are in the bathroom. That is OK. As it is OK the humidity and steam. But direct pressured water is not OK. If you want real shower radio that you will leave under the shower's jet you would need the Sangean H201, which is bigger and IPX7, submersible under 1 metre of water for a little time, and allows you to change to 9MHz or 10 Mhz steps, so it is valid for the US and the EU. But this radio is much smaller than the Sangean and as a radio is at least as good. The speaker is better than the Sangean H201. The speaker is sufficiently loud to kill the shower noise and allow to listen to the radio while showering. It is a very good quality speaker. The radio is very sensitive in AM and FM. The FM antenna is a cable with a sucker to fix it anywhere in the bathroom. It is a nicer design than the Sony ICF-S79, and also slightly smaller. In all a very worth purchase of a high quality bathroom radio. By the way it has no LW, just AM and FM. And remember it is a radio for the European market. I really recommend you to buy this radio instead of the Sony ICF-S79W that you now find everywhere. The Sony ICF-S79W is and is for the American market and the AM is different. Buy the ICF-S80 instead. And by the way, the ICF-S80 is a beauty and much more beautiful than the ICF-S79W.

Spend a little extra...it's worth it!
Excellent radio. Have had a number of less expensive ones but would recommend you spend a little more and get something that works well and is well made. Love this one!

Absolue Kaufempfehlung, jederzeit wieder!
Danke Sony.
