I really only wanted a simple gadget mainly to slice potatoes thinly for dauphinoise potatoes, I was not disappointed. The slicer works well, giving uniform slices of potatoes, and now that I have got used to it, I will be using it for a lot more slicing jobs. The thickness of the slice is also very easy to adjust. However, the blade is SHARP (very sharp), so rather that just use the blade guard, I also used a mesh metal glove to ensure my fingertips remained intact. The scaredy cat in me didn't trust myself to wash it without cutting myself either, so into the dishwasher it went, and all was great. I love the mandoline slicer - I will get lots of use out of it, but I would suggest using the metal mesh glove. On both occasions whilst trying to slice potatoes the reversible blade broke at its spot welds. The two parts were only held together by 4 spot welds. Unlike conventional mandalins this hand held one is very convenient really sharp easy to use and has 3 thicknesses. I like the way it has a ridge on the underside so it can be steardely fixed over the edge of any dish bowl or pan. The handle has spikes under it So the food item stays on and stops safely once finished. You can also lock the blade while cleaning. We had a previous one which sliced into box but it didn't last long. We merely chose this because of the reviews and the quality holds up. It can be awkward to keep still at times however it's very well made and I'm to worried about this breaking easily. Slices well and washes easily.
