For the initial setup part Alexa will speak through the small module. Once paired, the car speakers would be used.

Q: Does amazon app on phone have to opened to use? Ive heard the previous one does.

No. I've had the Echo Auto 1 installed in both of my vehicles for a few years. They automatically connect to my phone when I start my car and they are nearly flawless in operation; further, they do everything that the echo devices in my home do. Other than at setup, I've never needed to open the app on my phone to use the devices.

Q: What's are the benefit of upgrading to Gen 2 from Gen1?

My gen 1’s are still working great almost 2 yrs later. I never lose my connection. They’re actually on sale for under $10 during Prime Days! I might buy another couple just in case.

Q: Does this one actually work and will Amazon be offering a trade in for the dreadful 1st gen?

Good question. I have the 1st gen and I'm not impressed. I guess one can try this 2nd gen and then return it if not satisfied.
