Simply Classic
If you are used to the old British TV re-runs of this landmark animation series, then this particular box-set may come as a pleasant surprise to you. Though the familiar theme tune does lurk in the background, occasionally rearing its prehistoric head, none of the instantly recognisable title sequences and hopelessly catchy song are present here in the first series. Likewise, the two main families we all know and love are somehow subtly different, hewn from a slightly coarser rock than the families we are ummm ...more familiar with from the later seasons. This debut season, because of all its quirky strangeness, makes for very enthralling viewing; even if it's only picking up on all the myriad ways in which these early characters are subtly different from their later counterparts. Perhaps somebody entirely new to The Flintstones concept might watch these early episodes and not quite understand what all the fuss was about that made them such a cultural phenomenon, but if you grew up like we did with the seemingly endless British TV reruns of this classic series, you might find this inaugural season provides refreshing new perspective as well as hours of quality entertainment

Good old fashioned Flintstones
This was like the original Flintstones which was far superior than the more modern ones.

Not Quite Right
I should have read the other reviews!I'm not saying this series is bad. As other reviewers have said, it's interesting to see how the series evolved. The characters are a bit rough - notably the Fred/Barney relationship isn't quite right yet - and the first episode seems to be re-using a plot taken from Laurel and Hardy. Or perhaps it's just that the trope of bumbling, hopeless husbands vs. smart wives has been trodden a long, long time. It's a pity. Having watched series 1, I'm now much disinclined to move on to series 2 etc. where things will be as I remember them (e.g. the opening sequence gag with the dinosaur ribs drive thru). I guess after 30 years of the Simpsons I just find the whole "men are stupid" line of comedy less funny than it used to be.So: I was disappointed, but it's not Hanna Barbera's fault.

This is, I believe, actually adult humour. ...
This is, I believe, actually adult humour. These cartoons have 'subtle' inventionsin the 'stone age' scenarios which need an imagination to see the humorous wayin which they are portrayed. The background laughter is an audience ofadults and the humour is usually based around married couple scenarios.
