Think it would work. I wear it to do Krav Maga, including during the warm up session and don'the really notice it.

Can I just wear the cup inside my boxers ?

Boxers won't hold the cup in place to give you effective protection. Tight-fitting jockey briefs with a full pouch should be OK. For best protection a jockstrap or base layer shorts with a proper pouch for the cup are pretty essential IMO. Taking care of the family jewels is too important to leave to chance - if the cup shifts as you get caught the cup itself can do damage.

How restrictive is it when running/sprinting? Do you notice it there?

I haven't been for a run whilst wearing it but don't have any issues whilst doing my warmup. I wear compression trousers on top of it and I completely forget that it's there. Very comfortable.
