After reading about your misfortune, I make sure to only use fingertip pressure to tighten the pieces. When the lid assembly is placed into the carafe, it needs some "wiggle room ", so make sure it is a bit loose. Once it's done brewing, gently tighten by turning to top ball just a smidge with your fingertips. Don't let other people mess with it, especially teenaged boys with their superpowers just coming in. ;-) We have had a few small incidents involving our 15 y.o. grandson over-tightening things on accident. The one I am replacing was bought from Amazon Jan. 2015. It stated Poland on the Glass, but nothing on the plastic. Now they all seem to state Portugal on the glass portion. I like the BODUM embossed plastic frame, but it is an older model with the flat top and D handle.
