A close shave!!! but highly recommended
I purchased this for my husband after looking at the price of razor blades again, ouch! The last time he had an electric razor his mother purchased it for him, a newby with fluff on his face, which was 'cough'..years ago. A time of 3 rotary heads that ripped your face to pieces, after the torture he moved to a wet shave, swearing he would never go back, until now. (da da daaaaa) He is so impressed with the Braun series 3 he can choose a wet or dry shave, so does not have to give up the wet shave, BUT gentlemen be aware, my husband had a moustache when he went into the bathroom, that was like a wild, very hairy, caterpillar on his upper lip something undiscovered in the rainforests of the Amazon somewhere near Brazil (setting the stage), he thought it would take a few goes to thin it down - this particular creature is now extinct (sad pause -all sympathetic donations to WWF -who can use this to set up a project to try to save any further deaths of the hairy lip species). Gentlemen, the advice is: hold it a little further from your face if you are wishing to keep some of the facial hair, the Braun cut through this overgrowth in one go!!! (shock, amazement). I can vouch for the beautifully close shave, leaving his face as smooth as the preverbial babys! if his shave is not good I have that removed skin after a fight with sandpaper, look! not an attractive sight, so can vouch for the amazingly close shave he has had (smile). I nearly forgot to mention the rather neat little extra that pushes up from the Braun and will trim the edge of your moustache, the eye brows that are becoming comb overs and your side burn (doubting myself that these are called a 'side burn' why? answers on a postcard! - hair that comes infront of ears trying to do an Elvis impression), works perfectly. Husband very impressed, closest shave he has ever had..his moustache says in more ways than one! So recommend this to all you 'hairy bikers' (biking not compulsory) but removes facial hair beautifully - I will have to wait until he is out to test legs!! ha ha ha! - will update!! . Now I just need to get him to spec savers or he could lose more than his moustache! You must buy this, you know you are really worth it! (flick hair, stage right)...

An Extremely Effective Shaver
I had not used an electric shaver for some time, but the need to shave regularly and sometimes on a busy schedule made one necessary for me when wet shaving feels like a luxury. The cost of decent wet shave blades these days is also monstrous. I have found this Series 3 to be a really excellent performer that keeps my facial hair well at bay and fits well into a mixed shave routine. Unlike older shavers, where the foil covered the blades that were attached to the shaver, the blades and the foil are all one unit and come off together. They are also replaceable - and may be cheaper (thank you Amazon) than buying a big pack of wet razor blades. You can brush your bristles out our run the head under a tap (I tend to dry shave with the Braun). Performance wise, the Braun deals excellently with my chin and lip hair; on the side of my face, I have to really slow down a bit to get a smoother shave on my back cheeks and around the neck. One thing to say is that I get no razor burn at all as I do have sensitive skin. If you facial hair is a bit longer, just go more slowly. The S3 has not hurt me at all yet and its head is good for 18 months (and that I imagine is if you use it more than I do as like I said, I mix shave). Ergonomically it is hard to drop - fits like a glove in my hand. The only downside is that sometimes when I take the clear plastic foil protector off, the foil/blade head comes off with it and if you have not cleaned it previously, your bristles and dead skin goes all over the place so don't grab the foil protector too hard! Battery life is very good indeed and the pull out side burn blade is also very useful too. All in all a very satisfying piece of kit that just does what it is supposed to do. And isn't that good news!! Highly recommended.

Good value for money, next model up not really worth the money
I took some time to research the best value-for-money rechargeable wet electric shaver, and I think the Braun 3040 might be the one. In term of shaving performance, this is very good, even on dry shaving. I think people not shaving frequently may be disappointed, as this is not designed for cutting long hairs/beards. However, a precision trimmer is built-in for sideburns etc, and people shaving every day or every few days should be happy. Compared to the Philips shavers I had in the past, with rounded heads, this seems to perform better, and it's shaving a much wider area in one go. Other Philips models currently sold on Amazon for a similar price as the Braun 3040 don't include precision trimmers, and take much longer to fully charge, or are just dry models (much harder to keep clean). The replacement blades are also likely to be more costly. Build quality is very good, and the device feels robust. It's the first time I have a waterproof shaver, and it's going to make proper cleaning some much easier. If using for wet shaves, or cleaning the head under running water frequently (as opposed to using the provided brush for "dry" cleaning), Braun recommends to put some oil on the foils once a week (oil not provided), else water will make the mechanism too dry. I believe this is good advice as I had the same experience with clippers, but would have been nice to have some oil provided. Blades/foil should last for about 18-months, according to Braun, and cost about £20 to replace. Item is losing one star because of this, as spare blades shouldn't cost 60% of a new shaver price. Lots of people will buy a new shaver, which is not very green. Some people are reporting that the precision trimmer does not work, but it's moving so quickly that it may not appear to be working (when just looking at it). Some people are reporting that their shaver is not charging fully: the lights are indeed confusing. There are three charging lights, but only the top two light up when fully charged. The third light (red) is just to indicate low battery. It would have been better for Braun to just use the three lights as charge normal charge indicators. There is also an indicator at the bottom that is supposed to remind users when the blades have to be replaced. I guess it may just be based on duration, as opposed to actually usage/count. Differences with the next model up (Braun Series 3 3080), currently sold on Amazon for £30 more: * The cutting mechanism/blades/foil are exactly the same (so shaving performance will be basically the same) * The battery life is the same. Charging time is the same * Motor is the same, and body is broadly the same (apart from colours, and one more switch) * The 3080 comes with a charging station. 3040 with just a charging cable. As it's recommended to fully discharge before recharging (to preserve the battery), and charging should only have to be done about once a week (for 1 hour), I am not sure a charging cradle is that necessary * The 3080 comes with a traveling pouch. 3040 just has a protective plastic cap. However, third party travel pouches can be bought for £10 * The 3080 has an additional switch to lock the blades lower for sensitive areas None of this is worth an extra £30 to me, and it's interesting to see that the 3080 model is rated much higher on Amazon by customers, while the shaving performance should be basically the same as the much cheaper 3040...

Just Buy This!
I have suffered severe razor burn / bright red patches post shave on my chin and upper lip for the past 5 years to the point of becoming very embarrassing. Tried everything I could , went to dermatologist and resorted only shaving this area of my face once a week at weekends so redness would subside a bit for Mondays and start of work week. This Braun was delivered today, tried it straight away and I just had my first reaction free shave in years!! Superb blades in the foil allow you to cut the stumble but barely touch the skin. I went VERY light and it worked AMAZING! This entry level Brain will make a real difference to my life. I am delighted with this game changing purchase. I did the rest of my face just to compare with a blade shave and I would say it gets 95% as close but still looks like a very clean shave. I was looking at shavers for £300 to £500. Save your money and get this for the £50 and you won't be sorry. Great purchase and highly recommend ( especially those with sensitive skin, rosacea, suffer razor burn) . Well done Braun !!!

Close Shave
This was great. It avoided razor bumps. And quicker to shave without the foam and water.

A fantastic electric foil shaver at a great price.
At less than half price compared to Boots and delivered next day you can't go wrong. Braun are such a well know name you know you are buying quality. This shaver claims to be the best on 3 day stubble, and it doesn't disappoint. It is a fully wet and dry shaver, so you can use it as a standard dry electric shaver, or use it with shaving gel or foam in place of a razor. You can use it in the shower or bath, and can wash it under running water to clean it after use. I use it every day as I can't use a standard razor. I have psoriasis and shaving literally tears my skin open. This shaver is gentle enough to use without leaving my face sore, but good enough to shave it very close. It shaves closely on the first pass, so there is no need to go over the same bit over and over again, reducing irritation. At has an integrated trimmer for sideburns, which slides up with a push from your thumb and two shave heads which move independently to keep the shaver in contact with your face. The battery life seems good. On the day I received it, I charged it for 5 hours as instructed. The next instruction was to use it until the battery runs out and then charge it again. This conditions the battery so that a standard full charge will only take one hour. I will have to wait and see, as I have shaved every day since that first charge and it is still going strong. 7 days so far. I can't fault this shaver, and just hope it lasts a long time.

.....a curate's egg...
....my 5th electric razor and my 2nd Braun (the 1st being a battery model that I aquired with Texaco stamps decades ago and which I've still got...somewhere...) acquired c. 3 months ago and in regular use since. Also. the most expensive one I've ever bought, being X 2.5 dearer than my last razor, which lasted nearly 3 years and came from a leading cut-price German retail chain. So, what I like about the Series 3 3040s: 1). 'Feels' solid, relatively heavy and well-made. 2). Charges quickly and runs for about 8 days subsequently. 3). The main body is very easy to clean, by which I mean brush out since, even tho' it can be used 'wet' or 'dry' I don't and wouldn't ever use it as a 'wet' shaver... 4). Never had any 'sensitive skin' issues so can't comment on this advertised feature. 5). The hair trimmer is the best I've used to date... ....and on the 'minus' (hence ***) side: 1). As previously mentioned, the most expensive electric razor I've ever bought ...and I am aware that there are Braun and other manufacturers who offer FAR more expensive options.... All my previous shavers have worked quite adequately and I've been content with them. I therefore expected this new Braun to function fairly reliably.... 2). however, given the price, it has one particularly irritating issue that I think justifies its middling rating....as mentioned, the main body of the razor is easy to clean yet the shaving head has 'disassembled' itself 4 times when I GENTLY tap it on a hard surface to clean it out. The structure of the cutting head means that the little brush supplied is useless for cleaning it out, and one can only dislodge a little by blowing through the cutting head. I've never had this problem with any of my previous electric shavers....even the old battery Braun. The problem would have been mitigated if re-assembly wasn't such a fiddle....there are 6 slender - and therefore very fragile-looking - plastic pins on which the 3 parts of 'head which make contact with one's skin sit. Trial, error and patience have enabled me to now be able to re-build the cutting head with a degree of confidence that I won't snap off one or more of the aforementioned pins ( start with the 2 outer foils, correctly orientated, then insert the white middle piece between them...) Hence only 3 stars.....I like pretty much everything else about this shaver... maybe I've got a dodgy shaver head, but it works when re-assembled. If the battery and motor last until a new cutting head is needed I'll see how I get on from there....

Works well.
My son has been using another well know brand shaver for sometime and it finally gave up. I thought an ‘upgrade’ would be good, and thought a different brand might be a good try. On the previous one, the whole head moved, on this just the foils do. It's not too good at chowing straight into week long stubble as a previous brand we used. In fact, the results were pretty rough doing that, much longer time to shave and didn't do such a clean job. To combat this, I coax my son to try a different approach (he has autism, change isn't easy) - the compromise is to shave twice a week, just using the foils, but also using the trimmer (quite basic but functional) to help him take some of the thickness out (his beard grows very quickly). This is working well, despite the protests (did I say he doesn't like shaving?!). It is actually quite a nice and robust shaver, light weight and with decent foils and easy to clean. It's giving a better shave over all I think and great on his skin (not necessarily sensitive but prone to spots). If you're also a reluctant shaver and like to just do so once a week, you may wish to invest a bit more for something that will tackle that. If you like a beard there's a beard trimmer. No carry bag which is a shame. And you'll need a shaver adapter plug. The charge lasts well, and the charge level indicator means you’re not half way through a shave when it stops!

Braun 340 series 3 wet/dry shaver very good.
Love the shaver. Clean, close, shave. Use on face and head. Believes it shaves even closer with shave foam or gel. Anyway, I give it 5 stars for closeness of shave, one charge goes a long way, and easy to clean.
