Laughter, tears and relatable characters!
I had been looking forward to this book coming out since the summer when I read Holly’s extract in Hannah Witton’s book ‘Doing It’. When the book finally arrived on my doorstep I started reading and couldn’t put it down.I have never related to a character as much as I relate to Audrey Winters. I could completely understand everything the Audrey did through the book. All of her actions made sense to me because this book shows an accurate depiction of love, rather than the one we’re shown in dramatic romantic films. Audrey isn’t a straight forward character and this isn’t a straight forward romance novel. Audrey struggles with romance, she’s never too sure if her feelings and can’t easily read signs of romance.Audrey’s romantic interest Harry is much the same, he’s far from perfect. Harry is your typical boy, the one you know in real life who’s a bit of a flirt and a player. Harry isn’t Mr Darcey, he’s more rough around the edges but that doesn’t mean you don’t fall for him. He’s got that charm about him, I think all girls have come across a Harry at some point.I found myself laughing, crying and cringing for the characters throughout the book. Having worked at a cinema for more than 2 years I found all of the scenes in the cinema hilariously accurate. I can relate to Audrey’s pain of having to deliver a hot dog to an I thankful customer in a screen and the dread of Marvel movie opening weekend. In the end I’m not really sure how I felt. By that I mean when I finished the book I felt a bit of an odd mixture of emotions. I love that this book breaks the stereotypes of traditional romances and I applaud every decision that was made my Audrey in the book, even the final one, but that doesn’t mean that longing for things to have turned out differently. This book is an absolute must read for all young adults. Bourne tackles themes in the book head on a doesn’t skirt around any of the topics she wants to talk about wether that’s the realities of sex or periods. This book will challenge your opinion of love and romance and will have you questioning your enjoyment of any romantic films in the past.

A Good Book 💛
It Only Happens in the Movies is a good book that's follows Audrey who is struggling with her parents divorce and ends up meeting a boy in a new job that she's gets close to even though she's not one for romance. This is a nice book that is entertaining to read but also has a lot going on with some more serious topics within the book and a common theme of a problematic relationship. I liked when we got to see Audrey and Harry together but at the same time at times their relationship became frustrating to read as they seemed to find more problems and bad times than good. The storyline with Audrey's mum was interesting to read and see how her coping with this was effecting her everyday life and the dramatic ending was quite a surprise. It would have been nice to have got to know more about her family life as she spent so much time escaping it and it's a shame we never really got to know about Harry's family either despite it being mentioned a few times.I mostly liked this book but at times I wasn't sure. A good book that at times was frustrating but at least it was more realistic than some romance films!

Audrey does not care for love. Her parents marriage ended and it left her mother in a weird state so Audrey does not want that to happen to her so she swears off romance. That is until she starts a new job at her local cinema and meets bad boy Harry. If you have ever read any book by Holly Bourne before you will know that her writing style is wickedly funny and super easy to read. I get so lost in her novels and they take me back to my teenage years. Her writing is super truthful at times that it hurts, she talks about sexual assault, the lack of sapphic relationships in movies, racism etc. At one point one of the characters talk about not being able to orgasm through penetration which I think is just something that is super important to include off the cuff in YA. Like it's just spoken about casually but having that being in books lets young girls know that it's a thing and it's ok to be that way.I read this so quickly that I didn't really take any notes and I kind of hate myself for it. I remember the mother in this story was a bit of a mess, but you can 100% see where it comes from and how poor her mental health is.I'm not going to talk spoilers but I would love someone who has read this to let me know because I want to talk about the ending and how satisfying it was for me.My only thing with this book was because he was called Harry I could not stop imagining Harry Styles, who is an absolute sweetheart and not a bad boy and it was a bit disconcerting every time I read the name.

AMAZING!!!!
I can't say what I would like to say without spoiling the ending and I don't want to do that to anyone. But this book was beautiful in a funny, cute and careful way and I really recommend it.

A successful balancing act
Holly Bourne brilliantly manages a tightrope walk of writing a lovestory that makes you feel all the feelings, while at the same time explicitly aiming to avoid lovestory clichés. With each lovestory cliché that DOES come up, there is a twist and turn you didn't necessarily see coming. And it is SO refreshing and IMPORTANT to read a book in that kind of genre that openly addresses everyday sexism and the everyday problems it brings with it, especially for young women trying to figure out their way with love, sex and the roles they want to play (muha, movie joke). There are other serious matters addressed in this book as well. And – without giving too much away – the ending really stuck with me. I had and still have to chew on that for a while ;) Thank you Holly!

Its way to good for the cost
I always used to save my 5 stars thinking that there have to be a better book than this but when I read it I thought this deserves to get a 5 star. It incredibly changes the idea of love. We love imagining beautiful things in love and thats why we watch movies to just escape from the reality and somewhere in the middle we just start hoping for such love in our life. The title actually just told us that it only happens in movies but with our perspective we just assumed that clićhes collided with reality giving a typical ending to the book but it only happens in movies. And from my view ,utterly deserving .The words stay. And love is a choice and you have to choose it.
