is this fun for two people also?

Absolutely. It's a very well designed game that works well with any number of people. My boyfriend and I play it together often and we've found it's not much different from playing with 5 players

Is it best to learn to play the original Ticket to Ride first or is fine to start with this version (Ticket to Ride - Europe)?

They are both stand-alone games and, personally, I much prefer the European version. It was created after the original US map and has the feel of being an improved "version 2.0" of the rules and map layout. Once you have (and are hooked on) either TTR-USA or TTR-Europe you can then start looking at the various map packs (noting that the UK map is launching for Christmas 2015).

how does this compare with Catan and Carcasonne for four players?

I think this game compares similarly with Catan and Carcasonne for four players. It has the advantage over Catan of being 5 player. It is probably more similar to Catan than Carcasonne in that you slowly build up a network and never remove things from the game. It can be learnt in a day, but it will take a few plays to master.

Can this be plays without the stations to keep the strategy / complexity down for younger players? Thanks!

The game is for age 8 upwards but certainly a 7 year old would have no trouble with it. I think the game could be simplified without any doubt for younger players which could include dealing differently with the stations. I suggest just the grown-ups having a dummy run and deciding how to change the game a bit if you find you need to- you know your kids best!!
