Great toy for very little money
This is such a simple idea but so much fun can be had. i bought it for my 2 year old son, and I think that it is a great toy for children from about 1 to 4 years old (I think by 5 they will have got all they can out of it). My son isn't so interested in sorting and stacking, although he does do it a little. When I gave it to him a few days ago he couldn't thread yet - but he has learnt how to in no time, and has also learnt 'through the middle'and 'pull it through'- which are completely new concepts to him. So within a few days he has made a dramatic step forward in terms of manual dexterity, and learnt some new words/concepts. Great. He doesn't want to play with it all the time - but it is something that I can resort to on a rainy day.I bought it because of the rave reviews and the price, and i am very happy - good simple fun. I wish more toys were like this.It would be good if there was another thread supplied, but one is ok.

Worth buying though not quite the same as they used to be
Bought as present for 10 month old. Immediately noticed the plastic is of a lighter weight than it used to be and the threading lace is not cotton any more but is of a thicker softer synthetic substitute that only just goes through the reels if you twist it a bit. though baby is able to pinch the end and pull it through if I do the first bit. On the plus side, the reels tend to stay in place on the lace, and can be slid off fairly easily.Baby really enjoys playing with them (under supervision of course due to the threading lace), and it's a flexible toy - the reels can be sorted by colour, rolled about, thrown into a basket, threaded to make a 'snake', piled into towers of two or three reels. Older children could thread them in colour patterns, press into playdough or print with them in paint.

Sturdy, colourful set.
Great set of four colours for threading in patterns. Bought to support fine motor control development. Great fun when threading or stacking or sorting the reels. Would like some pattern cards to aid copying from simple to more complex. Great resource to building early literacy and numeracy concepts.

COLOURFUL FUN
Bought these for my one year old grandson because at the moment he loves threading things on to wool etc. The rope that comes with these reels is very sturdy and perfect for his little fingers to hold while threading. These reels are recommended for 3+ but as long as you are there to supervise, a younger child would be fine with them. They are brilliant for stacking too and are helping me to teach him how to say his colours. Oh and by the way - they make a good loud noise when he bashes one on the wooden side table, much to his delight. My daughter's nursery use these cotton reels so they come highly recommended.

OK if you're on a tight budget.
I've never been a fan of 'premium' toys, because overall premium toys don't last as long as cheaper toys.So I bought these because they were cheap, around the same time as I purchased some wooden beads and laces at double the price. I expected these cotton reels to be better and last longer but I was wrong this time. The laces in these didn't last long - they're a bit too thick so not easy to thread and my daughter gave up on them. When trying to push the lace through the reel it bunches up and goes thicker at the end you need to thread through. I was forever pulling the lace straight to unbunch it. Luckily, she had the laces from the more expensive beads, which don't have the same problem, so I chucked the ones from these reels. Some of the reels have been trodden on and have broken into small sharp pieces. The reels are also a bit tricky to keep clean, even with regular soaking in cleaning fluid. You can't get into the gaps to clean properly and for a fiver I'm not sitting down with a pipe cleaner to clean each one. This time round, I prefer the more expensive wooden beads which are stronger and easier to keep clean. For a fiver I shouldn't really complain, it's OK value for money, but I wouldn't buy them again knowing what I can get for not much more money.
