Excellent book for younger children
I think think book is very good for children up to around eight, however the boys of nine I have shown seem to this think it is too young for them, 'kiddy pictures ets', which is real shame as I think it is excellent. It starts the student with the basics and the CD means they can play along to something immedialatley, also you could introduce some of the the later chords to the early cd track as well. I would probably like some guitar tab to the supplement the traditional notation, but you could quite easily tab out of the songs yourself.

Recommended mostly, except for the CD
Our daughter has an interest in guitar playing, which is not strange as it runs on both sides of the families. So we bought her an affordable guitar on Amazon that she can also bring to guitar lessons at school. But in order to get her a little head start we were looking for a clear intuitive instruction book. We easily landed with this one as it had the best and the most favourable reviews and the price was right. It takes the student through the guitar basics. It was ease for our 9-year old daughter to work through it. It also comes with an CD.. which was praised a lot in the review & which I can understand. But realistically.. CD players are getting scarce our daughter has banned hers from her room long ago as it looks ‘ancient’. So an accompanying app or website might be more appropriate these days. Aside from this fairly big practical issue the book, interestingly learns children how to read/play notes. I’ve learned to play guitar a little but only by playing chords. So I might evne take up the booklet myself to enhance my skill and understanding. If only I had a little more time..

Great for young son to learn guitar!
I bought this as my sons guitar tutor asked me to get one and my son has gone from mindless discordant strumming to playing some nice tunes in a matter of weeks! The book is easy to follow, has fun illustrations and is a great tool for any budding guitarist !!

Brilliant book for kids!
Like many full-time guitar teachers, the lack of exciting and relevant teaching material is the bane of my working life. I have been using this book for 2 terms now, in group and private teaching and it is a revelation. This is the first time someone has really got it right - the well-thought out teaching technique and musical understanding simultaneously, perfectly paced (you actually end up doing nearly every piece instead of cherry picking) and all packaged into exciting music that kids just love. It really does make teaching much easier. I love the use of TAB later in the book to get the kids playing up the neck, and some of the pieces and songs are brilliantly written. The backing tracks are great and having James Bond in there is a master stroke!

Nice Beginners book - so long as you want to read music.
Why is there a whole load of music teachers out there, that just because they had to learn music (and so did I by the way) think everyone else has to do it as well. I can tell you for a fact that my 5 year old students don't want to learn music any more than they wanted to be able to read and write before they were going to be allowed to speak. This is a great book to start beginners on - buy why the all standard notation and hardly any TAB? So if, like me, you want to use this book for youngsters between 5-10 years old, you're going to have to TAB most of it or inflict notation on them. Personally I want young people to play first (as they do if left to their own devices). When they are ready they can develop a hunger for reading music (or not). As the majority of jazz, blues, pop, metal, folk fingerstyle and bluegrass players often don't know standard notation- but still seem to make a living - it's questionable whether students in Primary school will see the need either. And yes I know that if you want to be a pro player it's wise to learn, and yes I know how to read myself - but the majority of players won't become pros. So... I think the layout is very good and the progression from simple to harder is good and I'll be using it and TABing it myself. But I will also be using the Basic TAB Guitar Method books 1-4. Great book for primary school age kids
I teach guitar 5 days a week and I consistently find myself using this book to teach any kids learning classical guitar. This book is ideally suited to kids up to about the age of 10/11 and is far superior to other similar publications (like the Guitarist's Way series). The main selling point for the book is the CD which is full of lots of entertaining and varied backing tracks that make learning pieces that would otherwise be fairly lifeless, such as playing melodies on the open strings, fun. The layout is logical and clear and it guides the learner carefully through each stage without any big jumps difficulty from page to page.

I am trying to teach my son guitar and this seems like a great book so far. All the other books seem to be dealing with simplified chords to play common kids songs. This books focus on teaching music foundation. It goes into musical notation almost right away. Surprisingly kids are good at sight reading. Even I am getting a bit of refresher on music reading. I am a player and not a teacher, and I would not be able to come up with better lessons at the basics than this book provides. The songs are original, only I had no idea about some of the Australian terms are in the lyrics. It may bore an adult student a bit, it would be usable for that, but the context of this book is aimed for kids. Guitar books for adults are also quite boring as well.

I started this book with some of my new students and they love it! The book starts with the three first open strings and the tracks are very playful.
