Having got back into board games this year, years after last being into them when our son was young, we've been buying some of the classics that have come about since then. This one is popular and routinely highly recommended. It's a game based around laying tiles to build a continuous connecting landscape and playing your "meeple" playing pieces to claim terrain features and score points. This comes in a nicely designed box with very solid components, made of of cardboard tiles and wooden "meeple" and feels like real quality. It feels like very good value for money. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, with good examples to get you started. We found ourselves getting out heads around it very quickly. It's a very enjoyable game, engaging yet very relaxing. The design is clever, simple yet with a decent amount of complexity within. This has become one of our most popular games, played between myself and my wife and with friends. We love it, this is one I'd recommend to anybody looking to collect modern classic board games.

My partner and I absolutely love this game which we were able to learn, set up and play really quickly. I'm always hesitant to buy board games like this because I'm not really into castles or fantasy (which the box art seems to hint towards), but it came highly recommended, and we were looking for something new and fun to play during the UK lockdown restrictions. We were not disappointed. At first, we played the simple/standard rules to help us understand the game. The game is so easy to set up, you can learn how to play within minutes, and games rarely last more than 15 minutes. It is highly replayable and suitable for a wide range of audiences and group sizes (we personally play it as a couple but will be playing with friends soon). Each subsequent game that we played, we introduced a new one of the "supplementary" rules that were included as sort of mini-expansions. These included "The farmers", "The River", and "The Abbot". We thoroughly enjoyed these too! I think that the cost of the base game is quite reasonable (although as always, I'd love it even more if it was cheaper), but we're a bit put off buying any of the expansions as some of them seem quite expensive.

Classic tile laying game often cited as a 'must have' in a board gaming collection.. and now I'd have to agree. I love getting the kids round a table to play some game or other but have only just got around to Carcassonne. It's IS a simple game once you get going and understand it. The rules sheet isn't too long, but probably just long enough with enough nuances to make a first read through a little intimidating but that's true of so many wonderful games out there which aren't the commercially advertised mainstream, but a quick search of the net will throw up plenty of examples of gameplay and i'd recommend this as a way in, with the Tabletop series on youtube being a great source. I said it's simple and it is. You pick a tile from facedown stacks, lay it next to one already on the table joining, roads, fields, towns or whatever. You can choose to place on of you pieces (Meeples) on the roads. towns or field to 'claim' them and you get your points when a road or town is competed. When all the tiles are used you count some extra points for fields and incomplete roads or towns. The beauty is that it's really hard to tell who will win until the final count up and each game throws up different patterns to the 'landscape' so no game is quite the same. It will take a few runs thruogh to start to really understand the strategy of laying the tiles and placing you Meeples but stick with it and you will be rewarded by an absorbing game that needs a little thought and advance planning. I think my kids were sceptical at first but once the idea sank in we all love it. Great game and not at all surprising it's a classic.

An extremely easy game to pick up and learn the rules for. It's also very easy and quick to teach to other players. The game is simply to take a tile, place it down in a position where the artwork aligns, and place a meeple if you want to, provided you can. You can't place a meeple into a feature already occupied, but you can sneak more meeples into a feature but merging two existing incomplete features together - a fun bit of strategy that allows you to share or steal points from your opponent! The game stops when there are simply no more tiles to draw from, so it has a natural finishing point, and at that point, any remaining scoring is done. The game quality of the tiles feels really nice; however, a few of mine are misprinted, so the paths don't quite line up, unfortunately, but it's still clear which features are supposed to line up. There's many expansions for Carcassonne, and I will considering picking some up! Would recommend!

It’s expensive for what you get. But it is a good game. Buy the complete game with additional add ins. Better value

I was introduced to this game a couple of years ago during a rare family reunion where my niece’s family played it fast & furiously competitively. As a newbie it didn’t take me too long to grasp the fundamentals and it was fun, although I had no chance against the cut-throat family. Returning home to the peace & tranquillity of Central France and my lovely wife, we decided to get the base game (which included the river expansion) and after a few play-throughs decided to get the ‘Inns and Cathedrals’ and the ‘Builders and Traders’ expansions to give it a bit more depth and extend the playing time. My wife and I usually play co-operative two-player games, of which we have a fair collection, and beyond the perennial good-natured cribbage tournament we do not compete. We play for the pleasure of playing and totting up the scores at the end is as competitive as it gets; none of the cut-throat muscling-in or sabotage of other players’ cities & roads, just amicable gameplay. We don’t bother with the farming thing as that is just another point-scoring device and adds nothing to our semi-co-op gameplay style. It may not be true to the intended spirit of the game, but it works for us. The rules are simple and easy to learn, the tiles are very well printed and surprisingly robust – after many plays there is no sign of wear and the cloth bag provided with the Inns and Cathedrals expansion (I think) keeps the game table tidy. The tiles provided with the expansion blend seamlessly with those of the base game. Being simple & quick to learn, it is a good introduction to board gaming for kids although with my niece’s boys it tended to get a bit boisterous and they tried to cheat all the time. It was very nice to see a family playing together rather than being glued to various devices. Like ‘Forbidden Island’ we often play Carcassone as a bit of light relief from our more complex grown-up two-player co-op games, but if we play it too much it can be a bit ‘samey’. The fully co-op ‘Mists over Carcassonne’ game has been ordered and some friends are bringing it over from the UK later in the month (since Brexit, delivery charges to France are crazy) and we’re greatly looking forward to its arrival. Great game. I've been playing the app for several months now and couldn't resist the price drop of £15. I'd been watching the big boxes with more expansions included, but this offer was too good to resist. In the box are the cardboard land tiles. In this set that's 84 ordinary tiles and 12 river tiles. Five sets of wooden meeples and an abbot meeple. Finally a scoreboard, that one meeple travels along to record your score, as you complete cities, roads and monasteries. The game itself is very simple to play. You lay land tiles and choose to lay a meeple or not on one of it's component - field, road, city or monastery. They all have a slightly different scoring system, but if you complete them during the game you get points, if you don't complete, you still get points at the end scoring. The tactics and strategy involved can be complex, giving a 'simple' game a lot of depth. It plays well with two players, but you can play with up to five. My six year old loves it, as it's simple enough for her to play . The graphics and quality of the components is good. The rulebook is well laid out, with plenty of graphics and a good explanations The only component I'm slightly disappointed in, is the scpre baord. I'd prefer it go higher than 49. If you've never played before I'd recommend watching some of the You Tube videos's people have made about Carcassonne. There are plenty of reviews, game run throughs and rules explanations. Watching these can help learn the rules quicker and give you ideas on strategies to adopt etc.

Brilliant board game suitable for the whole family. We have played it a number of times now and kids absolutely love it.

Great quality! The game is fun and easy to play for even just two players. It also has several built in variations that keep it interesting across multiple plays? A definite must for family game night.

Actual game is great! Packaging, not so much. Just came in the cellophane wrap with delivery stickers directly on that! No outter box to protect the item!
