I did use these in the woods for steak. I was pretty impressed but I did use another tool for elevation and then put the grills on top of that. It was a simple wire frame stand for boil pot. Extremely basic. It worked great. The welds looked clean, no rough scratchy edges. Its exactly what you would hope it to be. One half is great for 2 steaks. So do with that what you will. I recommend this item, it is well made and works great.

I wanted a cook surface I could actually carry, not another collapsed wire rack that warps the first time it sees a real fire. These Branded Boards grates are food-grade 304 stainless, about six by twelve inches each and thin enough that two of them, plus the burlap bag, disappear into a camp bag. Set side by side over a small coal bed or a couple of rocks, they span a useful rectangle. The steel heats fast, stays flat, and lets sausage, vegetables, and a small steak release once they have seared instead of gluing the way cheaper plated wire does. Direct wood heat is the point here. I have run them over coals rather than as a backyard kettle substitute, and they come off the fire clean enough to wipe, drop in the hemp drawstring bag, and get moving to the next site. That bag is the right idea: natural fiber, cinches shut, and keeps ash off the rest of the kit instead of a plastic pouch that would melt next to the fire. Soap and a scrub when you get home is enough. The stainless does not pick up the sticky residue that makes cheap grates feel used-up after one weekend. At this size it is a backpacking, hunting, and truck-camp tool, and that is exactly the job it does well. Two large grates plus the bag is the combo that earns a permanent spot in the kit.

So far so good! My favorite thing is how compact and lightweight it is. It seems very durable since it got extremely hot but didn’t bend under a heavy cast iron pan. I used to carry a big heavy grill camping but now this does the job just fine.
