It'll work for the price as a starter. There is a little play that I have a little concern with but accurate with my feeler gauge. I will buy a higher quality one once I get certified as a coating inspector.

This isn't great for large sheets to measure thickness due to the moment arm the test article would apply to the jaws, vs. a micrometer which can secure onto. But for small objects which fit nicely standalone hands-free it's quite good. $40 price makes it even better. My unscientific quick tests were showing accuracy to within a few tenths (+/- 0.0002") or so. Better than most standard calipers that read to 1/2 a tenth. Yes, the "readout" shows +/- 0.00005" but don't confuse that with accuracy. It takes that readout vs. the cheaper model at 0.0005" readout to demonstrate the accuracy I'm seeing. Plastic case is a bit cheap/wonky, but again $40. It's fine.

Primarily bought this because I was getting into tying my own tapered flyfishing leaders. It’s true that the leader spools tell you the diameter on the spool label, but that’s not always reliable… For example, based on my own testing, I learned (and validated from reading some forums) Maxima Ultragreen is often one to two sizes larger than the printed diameter of their smaller tippet sizes (i.e. one to two thousandths larger), Whereas my Rio tippet spools are always less than 0.0005” from stated thousandth of and inch. Pro-tip: due to the sensitivity of the instrument, in fact that it was important I was able to accurately measure differences of one 1000 of an inch between different pieces of leader material, I found it very beneficial to get one of those weighted, micro meter stands and place this in it rather than trying to hold everything in my hands. I haven’t done any formal testing or validation but as far as I’m concerned, It seems well built, easy to use an accurate enough for anything I’ll be doing.
