The tragic story of Dr. Samuel Mudd of Maryland, who in 1865 was arrested for his alleged complicity in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and sentenced by an illegal military court to a lifetime of hard labor at the American penal colony of Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas. The unfortunate Mudd, whose only "crime" was to set the broken leg of a mud-caked stranger who turned out to be John Wilkes Booth endures the cruelties of the sadistic commandant and the condemnation of the public at large, until his selfless courage during a yellow fever epidemic earns him a pardon by President Andrew Johnson. The film implicates Lincolns secretary of war Edwin Stanton, whom some conspiracy theorists now believe was behind the assassination plot.

A very accurate portrayal, with dramatic license
In the 1970's and 1980, the hotel I worked for had 12 movie crews, staying there. Some great movie stars, and a few great actors. "The Ordeal of Dr. Mudd", was a very good movie, and I especially love the scenes I saw shot. Guy Del Russo, was the makeup artist on the film, and a good friend of mine, who died shortly after filming. That makes this movie very special. If you want to know how much this movie means to me. I paid a private individual $99.00, for my copy of the DVD. I say, it was a bargain. This movie, in my opinion, was one of the best performances, by Dennis Weaver, a great actor, who is missed. Also the acting in the best tradition, were Richard Dysart, and Susan Sullivan. I say, get this movie, and see the injustice, this government, imposed on one very great man, played by a great man. This one's for you Guy. J. Russell, "Marty", Savannah, Georgia

but they knew each other?
but Mudd and booth had lunch, twice in Washington DC before the Assassination, and they meet once at Mudd's farm before that when Booth was scouting his escape route under the guise of looking for a place to buy. but in the movie they don't appear to know each other.

Prisoner of Shark Island
A much better version of this story, directed by John Ford, is Prisoner of Shark Island (The Ford at Fox Collection) .

Dennis Weaver at his Best
I taped this movie when it first aired on Beta. I was so happy to see it on DVD at what ever price after years of searching. A true story in American History that never should be forgotten. A must have for any collector of history.

Misguided ideals and purity of thought.
A wonderful performance by All the Players taking part in this chunk of history, as astonishing as; "The Prisoner of Shark Island." To quote from James Swanson's informative and meticulously researched book 'Manhunt' - Asia Booth's (John Wilkes Booth's sister) loving memory to her brother closes with a graveside elegy: "But, granting that he died in vain, yet gave his all on earth, youth, beauty, manhood, a great human love, the certainty of excellence in his profession,a powerful brain, the strength of an athlete, health and great wealth, for 'his cause.' This man was noble in life, he periled his immortal soul, and he was brave in death. Already his hidden remains are given Christian burial, and strangers have piled his grave with flowers." "'So runs the world away.'"

The Ordeal of Dr. Mudd
We had taken a trip to the island where Dr.Mudd was held it made the movie even better. This is a lost piece of lost history. The movie is a little slow but tell of the aftermath of the President Lincoln assassination. Dr. Mudds true story of being in the wrong place doing good things and having half a life time of trouble because of it.

Wish I could speak Spanish!!!!
The DVD was purchased as a gift for my Dad who had seen the film years ago and couldn't find the DVD on the high street. He was absolutely thrilled when I gave it to him. Unfortunately when he tried to watch it he couldn't get the audio in English. As he doesn't speak Spanish he couldn't work out how to do it. When I spoke to him the following morning he was so disappointed it was in a foreign language and said " I wish I could speak Spanish so I could watch the DVD". I was also disappointed and arranged for the DVD to be returned to me. Having fiddled around with what I can only assume was the menu, I eventually managed to get the DVD to play in English. Returning the DVD to my Dad and explaining what to do he watched the DVD and really enjoyed it. Although it took a while to work out what was required it was worth it. I did check to ensure the playing region was compatible with the UK before purchase, however, as it wasn't made clear on the original Amazon description, I was unaware that it was from a foreign seller and would be in a different language. Lesson learnt.

So I was pleased to watch it
This DVD film has a small scene in it which has been cut out of a copy "The prisoner of shark island" (1936) which I have.So I was pleased to watch it. However it is in Spanish, and I do not seem able to get into any (English) subtitles. Apart from that it is well worth watching.
