The pieces are beautiful and heavily weighted. To me, the knights are one of the most important pieces for the aesthetics of a set and these knights, with the wild manes and open mouths are beautiful. All the other pieces are proportional with tall bishops and substantial rooks. I am always a little disappointed with a set that has nice or even just fair knights but puny rooks. That is not the case with this set.Only a few things could have been better, and they are all very subjective, are just my opinion, definitely are minor, and not enough to give the set anything but five stars. Here goes: the pieces are not shiny, the queen is just a little too tall I think, and the bases on the king and queen are a shade too big, almost filling up most of a 2.25 x 2.25 inch square.Everything else including the other proportions is just great. Even though the pieces have kind of a dull flat finish, there are no discernible seams. The reversible, silicone mat (black and white on one side and green and white on the other) is nice, thick, and foldable. It is a bonus even though I prefer a leather or wood board and may not use the silicone one.
