True Genius
Although the word genius is heavily overused in describing musicians, there is zero doubt that Hendrix was one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time. Up there with Mozart and Miles Davis. One listen to Axis: Bold As Love confirms that. Not an easy listen, certainly less immediately accessible than it's predecessor Are You Experienced (which is merely one of the top 10 rock albums of all time), but patience will be amply rewarded. This is much more of a studio album than its predecessor (the revolution sparked by Sgt. Pepper was in full swing), so The Experience rarely performed these songs in concert. I think this is an album that Hendrix wanted to make more than AYE. The explosive commercial success of that first album gave him more creative control and he does things with the guitar here, on epics like If 6 Was 9, that nobody else had even thought of to that point. It was a stunning display of what the electric guitar is capable of. But this would not be a legendary album if it were not for another collection of excellent songs. Overtly less pop oriented than AYE, Hendrix still delivers some of his most achingly beautiful tunes ever, such as Little Wing and Castles Made Of Sand.A couple of beefs: There are some backing vocals on a couple of tracks (I think by Mitch Mitchell) that are so bad that they threaten to ruin the songs (most notably on Wait Until Tomorrow). They don't - the songs are too good for that - but it would have been nice if someone in the studio had told this dude that he can't sing. And why was Little Wing cut short at 2:27? The fade out starts just as Jimi starts soloing and you're made to feel like you had two bites of filet mignon and someone snatched the plate away. What's there is gorgeous but, as Derek and the Dominos and Stevie Ray Vaughan demonstrated with their fabulous covers, this song was meant to be stretched out. (Ironically the opposite of so many rock/pop songs today that drag on for over 5:00 minutes and should have been at least two minutes shorter).Given the overall quality of the songs and the performances, these are relatively minor complaints. It is still a masterpiece that any serious fan of rock music must own.

Quintessential Hendrix
Loved the gatefold, loved the sleeve. Really vibey record, just an absolute adventure to listen to. Balances the psychedelic stuff with some solid songwriting

Sacd review from old hero worshipper
Thank you everyone who preserved and enhanced Jimi’s recordings. Have new sacd hybrid playing on oppo and homemade Jbl driver speakers.History: saw him and experience twice as teenager. I have bought into the sacd technology hoping and praying that great music would still be converted. Axis produced in 2019 sacd hybrid is proof I was not disappointed. Will immediately buy first and third albums when available. Big big fan - always had first three albums on vinyl. I prefer sacd sound even over vinyl. Still have vinyl. Straight cd music has always grounded on my nerves and made me feel like I had to torn it off to avoid headache. Super audio compact disc playing a DSD signal through a modern quality dac system is for me and my taste!Golden rose just started on replay of album. I’ve already played it at least ten times in a month of owning it. I can’t say it’s like never the music before but it is a STUNNING difference. Long live Jimi and the Experience memories! What’s man- how blessed to have him bare his soul to the world.Addendum: over fifty years I’ve been enjoying this album first on vinyl with Sherwood tube receiver and Witchita 12” 3 way speakers / migrated to dynaco 120 watt transistor amp and finally way too late Jbl L100 century speakers. The most amazing thing is sacd is the best sound ever overall. For one things unlike vinyl there is perfect stereo separation - jimis early specialty. Plus drums are free to move unlike vinyl where drums are trapped in center channel to keep needle from jumping out. Finally each individual instrument and wonderful nuances of Hendrix’s amazing voice stand alone. Young people could not understand what it meant to be an early Hendrix fan - if 6 was 9 is his life theme. It branded us all hippies which I am proud to claim today still. Thank you Jimi Hendrix you great great great great born in the USA Superman!

Mono or Stereo?
I didn't notice when originally ordering this vinyl record that there is a mono and stereo remaster of this classic album widely available to purchase at a similar price. In fact there's a ton of different versions that have been issued over the years. To be honest I picked up the mono version by accident more than anything. The difference is not made particulalry clear in the Amazon listing. Look for the "mono" at the top left of the album cover. Initially I thought that I had made a mistake, but actually it's really grown on me. The mono mix effectively nerfs all of the stereo panning from the original, but thats not always a bad thing, because you get a very focused and punchy sound. My copy spins a little unevenly, but nothing too extreme. There is very little to no surface noise. There's a single side of liner notes by John McDermot that discus the mono remastering process by Bernie Grundman. The gatefold sleeve artwork is monochrome inside with a stylised image of the three musicians and the reprinted lyrics.
