Very easy to set up, Easy to use and Accurate!
This review evaluates the “Wittboy 7-In-1 Weather Station” made by ECOWITT. The product was well protected in its packaging and comes in a form fitted box. What’s in the box: One 7-in-1 Weather Station, One (1) Wi-Fi Hub, One (1) RJ-45 CAT5E network cable, One (1) AC power block, One (1) bird deterrent ring, and an owner’s manual. First impressions: Well made and easy to use. I have owned a few mechanical weather stations and they all crap out after 4-5 years; the bearings go, and things just break. This weather station has zero moving parts and everything is measured by high-tech sensors (temperature, humidity, wind direction and speed, light and UV levels as well as rainfall data) and transmitted wirelessly via a 915 MHz frequency back to the networked hub. The hub is the wireless receiver of the 915 MHz signal as well as the transmitter (via your wireless or wired LAN network) of the data to your phone or to a PWS (Personal Weather Station) internet-based weather services, such as Ecowitt Weather, Weather Underground, Weather Cloud, or Weather Observation Website. The weather station can also be used with other (or more) sensors available at extra cost from Ecowitt such as lightning strikes, soil moisture, thermo-hygrometer, pool thermometer, water leak detector, etc. The weather station requires two (2) AA batteries (Lithium recommended, not included) to power the transmitter as a backup in inclement non-sunny weather when the onboard solar panel can’t power the system. I found the weather station easy to set up, no exaggeration literally one step shy of taking it out of the box and plugging in. ProTip: Configure and test everything on your tabletop before mounting outside somewhere high up to ensure everything works as it should. Insert two new lithium AA batteries into the Weather Station and close the watertight enclosure. Download the ECOWITT APP (free) and create an account (free). Plug in your Ecowitt Hub and connect it to your network (the easiest way is a wired CAT5E RJ-45 connection to configure it first). The blue LED light on the hub will link and then go solid when connected to the weather station. My weather station is located approximately 100 feet from my hub and it connected near immediately. The hub connected via DHCP to my LAN promptly and within less than a minute after plugging everything in I was receiving live data from my weather station. I already had an account on Wunderground which I updated to reflect my new equipment. I set up my Wunderground upload key into my Ecowitt App account and voila I was transmitting live weather data to the public worldwide. Once again this was the easiest set-up of a PWS I have ever done. My past systems were always an exercise in frustration with dropped connections, non-reporting, etc. The only thing this kit doesn’t have is a real-time display for the house; you must use your cellphone. Well to me this was an issue because my 76-year-old M-I-L likes to see the weather and doesn’t use modern gizmos… I looked on Ecowitt’s website and a display unit was nearly $200 plus shipping from the manufacturer – OOOOOUCH! That would be about 2/3 of the cost of the new weather station itself. So with some research, I was able to come up with a much cheaper solution: A unused Android tablet and a $14 CDN “WHATWEATHER” APP. Works flawlessly and fully integrated with my Ecowitt weather station via my Wunderground account. Now I have an attractive display of my onsite weather. Cost-effectiveness and value: I was very satisfied with the quality of this product; it is well made, easy to set up and install, easy to use, and accurate. The system is easily expandable to incorporate additional sensors. At a current price of $260.99 (plus a $20 off coupon), I feel that this is good value for the quality and functionality delivered. In summary: The “Wittboy 7-In-1 Weather Station” made by ECOWITT is a quality product that works well, easy to use, is easily expandable, and is fairly priced. I would recommend this product without reservation. Pros 👍: ✔ Rugged, well made, good fit and finish. ✔ No moving parts. ✔ Easy to set up right out of the box. ✔ Great wireless transmission range – up to 1,000 ft unrestricted, 500 ft restricted. ✔ Powered by an integrated solar panel and backup lithium AA batteries (not included). ✔ Reports temperature, humidity, wind direction and speed, light and UV levels, and rainfall data ✔ Accurate, detailed reporting. ✔ Easy to use & understand APP ✔ Supports data reporting to internet-based PWS weather services. ✔ Fairly priced. Cons👎: ✘ None.
