Joyce Chen Cook Book (English and Traditional Chinese Edition)

a classic
This is the classic Joyce Chen cookbook from years ago. I purchased it more for historical value than the recipes which are good. There are much better cookbooks but if you want a piece if history this is it. The recipes are solid.

Both of my sons also love Chinese food so we are all hoping for this
I bought this book for my wife. She is a very experienced chef, having trained at the French Culinary Institute of New York and having held some prestigious positions at restaurants such as Rosalie's in Marblehead, Massachusetts (closed a long time ago). I actually met Joyce Chen and her son Stephen Chen when they had two restaurants - one at Fresh Pond, and Joyce Chen, Small Eating Place on Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge. At the time she was very friendly and always made it a point to say hello to me when she saw me.Her attempts to cook Chinese food to this day have met with less than success. Hopefully this book will let her showcase her cooking talents for us again! Both of my sons also love Chinese food so we are all hoping for this. Her food remains to this day my favorite Chinese food of all time. It is too bad that her son ran the business into the ground, at least that is what I heard.

Love it!
Although I know my way around the kitchen, I had never tried to make Chinese food. Until now; a friend introduced me to a few photo-copied pages from this cook book. These recipes are fantastic! Most of them are easy enough to follow, the steps are well defined and Ms Chen gives history and background to most of her recipes. She has charted all of the recipes in the book by level of difficulty, whether or not it can be reheated, just how complicated it is, etc. My family did not believe my first attempt was actually homemade! It also gives you the option of adding or leaving out certain likes or dislikes in the family (we are talking pineapple here!) but sometimes I add extra cashews for the others. Once started I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book, thank you Amazon! I have now mastered a good part of it and working on more! I have also given many as gifts! Joyce Chen Cook Book

Great older recipe book
This paperback version of a hard cover edition of the "Joyce Chen Cook Book" is just what I needed at camp. I received my original copy many years ago from my mother after telling her that I enjoyed watching Joyce Chen on television. I have used several recipes with much success over the years and this year decided that I wanted a copy to leave at camp instead of carrying it back and forth each season. The recipe for Sweet and Sour Shrimp sauce is especially good and I use it with meatballs for potluck suppers. The bacon wrapped water chestnuts are excellent except that I cook them a bit longer than Mrs Chen to crisp up the bacon. The copy I received through Amazon's used books was in great condition for the price I paid and I could not be any happier.

They don't make cookbooks like this anymore
Written by a Chinese cooking icon in the 60's. If you have any gaps in your chinese cooking (who doesn't), this will fill them in, and also let you know really interesting facts about how the chinese feel about their food and how they use their ingredients and what they use. lots of provincial style tips. I challenge the best chinese home cooks to not learn something new on each page. Find this old book and get it.
